OK been a week now. Had to get some shyt of my chest coz this was one of my weirdest listening experience of all Nas' catalogue.

Last week I told my wife and kids to forget about me from thursday night to Friday morning, don't even talk to me and shyt 😭😭, I was really expecting something exceptional/historical and I set my alarm at 5.45 and 6AM Friday morning to listen to the A2HH stream live with everybody. Previous night I couldn't sleep coz of anticipation and fell asleep around 3.30 something. And of course 3hrs later when the alarm rang, I fukking didn't wake up. All I know is I jumped out my bed at 6.40, already mad as hell I had missed it, log onto stationhead and they were playing Abracadra... I guess it was the second spin. I was throw off man, I felt Nas was sounding totally out of place, forcing himself on such a beat, and with simplistic sucking his own dikk rhymes, like not the Nas brags different type he does usually.

I'm not even sure they played the whole album in order but anyway... Office Hours... Nas spitting insane, but the shock of 50s voice and short verse kinda killed it for me. When Black Magic kicked in, it felt weird again. Like on Abra, the 808s hit fukking hard but the rhyming on the first verse felt very basic to me. At that point I'm having PTSD of Summer on smash and I can't think of anything else, even if the 2nd verse is much better. But I already know I'm listening to something that's way inferior to Magic.. Imagine it even makes me not like Motion on first listen coz of the hook is bugging me..

To shorten it up, the only song I really love on first listen is Slow it down. I think I played it a 2nd time in the bed, and fall back to sleep tight as hell. Wifey wakes me up later on and asks me about the album and I tell her it's a fukking letdown.

If it were another artist I might have not even gave it another listen. Butttttt, the next day we on the road for a long drive and I play it again and that's when I get a brand new listening experience. The tracks I felt were mid/bad on first listening were the ones I was rewinding the most. And when my wife said "for someone who said the album sucked u been looping it all day" 😭 that's when I realized that shyt had mad replay value.

I finally accepted it couldn't be a second Magic. I had already somehow anticipated that the level couldn't be going up eternally, at some point they were gonna make an album that's not as brilliant as the previous. And I see why they took this angle, probably for that reason actually.

It's a good pause during the series, a different album from the rest, all of them are different but this one's really apart. Not mad at it, and certainly not mad if Nas keeps on working with Hit. I wouldn't say no to a couple other producers sending shyt, but I can't imagine anybody else in the market handling a full Nas album, pushing him to this level of rapping he's had for 3 years. And Hit-Boy will have my eternal respect for that.

All in all, I think I now place it slightly above KD1. Can't touch the other 3 though, IMO.

Crazy my reaction to each song almost identical on first listen and how sequencing / expectations/ type of songs had me disappointed.

Which meant that even the song Motion which I think is amazing. On first listen I was kinda just critiquing things like the chorus.

But like you said after numerous listens this a real good album

Good break. From what I can see from Nas at this part of his career is that he is really challenging himself to get better in certain areas that he maybe didn’t feel as strong initally. Some improvements that I feel like he made are flow, cadence, hooks, anthem type records for shows and mastering the modern day sound. I feel like over these 5 albums he made attempts to do things he never has before. I legit think Nas still tries to get better. I also think Nas hears and see more than we think. People said he was good at hooks so he started crushing hooks, people said he can’t pick beats and I don’t even hear people say that anymore. People said he couldn’t do the double time flow and now he has mastered. He is a true artist that works on his craft.

Yeah I feel you. And what he's really really mastered is hooks man, since Magic/KD3 it's been insane really. Sometimes there's hooks that feel like verses until he starts rapping the actual verse and you realize oh shyt that was the hook

I'm still not totally sold on double time tho, not that I don't think he's got good at it, but rather that it still kinda feels forced, to me.

I told you to log off that night you lost ya mind for minute :russ:
LMAO bro, that morning was a terrible experience, won't ever do it that way. I had 2 totally opposite experiences listening like this, I'll remember that morning I woke up at 6am for KD3 for many years to come. Unfortunately I also can't really erase that first Magic 2 listening either..

Haha man, on first listening I hated the Motion hook and that break at the end of the track... i thought it was a cheap ass Candy Shop interpolation. The Pistols melody, on release day I said it was his son playing on a playskool piano and now it's one of the beats that stays in my head 🤣🤣

Maybe I just don't have the ears for first listen no more, but I know for Magic/KD3 I was blown away out the gates and really contemplating having either of them in his all time top 5.

But let's say Travis' album today, I'm seeing everybody praising but I had to wait for track 14 & 15 2nd beats to bump my head.. I'm no Travis fan tho, had never listened to one of his albums fully before and even here I skipped the majority of the tracks, shyt not for me..

Love the hidden features thing tho. Wonder if Nas at some time will go the star studded route. For years I've been wishing he made a double album with one part by himself and 2nd part full of collabs with all time greats and some of this generation's most talented cats like JID.

Seems your in UK or Europe too right? honestly i'm not sure i'll do a 5am first listen again haha.

But yeh certain albums it's instant you know it's great. Like Magic. While other albums take some time. Not Nas, but first time I heard Bandana by Gibbs didn't really fukk with it. But after few more listens loved it and eventually one of my favourite albums from that time period

All the reviews I could find that might go up on MC/AOTY:
Let me guess, Pitchfork trashed it. Not giving them my click to find out, everyone is entitled to their opinion but I can't stand that site.

Similar reaction off first listen. lol. I was expecting something different and walked in thrown off. Doesn’t help that I was in a terrible mood when I first listened. By the time I got it in the whip tho my whole view of the album changed. lol. It’s just about letting go of the idea of the first joint. That’s when it hits u.

I know it’s probably not your type of music but …

I just heard Echoes ft Beyoncé from Travis album produced by HitBoy :wow: :wow: :wow:.

He murdered that…

MIXING AND MASTERING MATTERS

Every instrument is living
Every sound is pumping
The clarity
The drums knocking
The vocals cut through

Fire David Kim :camby:

Esco deserves pristine clarity

He’s OD with it but my reaction was madd similar, except when the beat kicked in I was almost literally jumping around my car, I knew Nas was gonna go crazy. Song has to be the single if they’re gonna release a single

Well yesterday on the spaces David said he only had 2 days to mix and master magic 2. I’m sure this Travis album was months and months of mastering.

50 is so washed :laff:

when you hear shyt like that it makes you appreciate how Nas still maintained good vocals this far in his career

It's crazy cuz 50 don't smoke or drink a lot Nas does you would think Nas vocals would be fukked up at this point lol

I know what you're talking about. I'll listen to Kanye's production and there's another level up that Hitboy can go. Hit's production reminds me of earlier Kanye. I actually think he decorates the track a little too much with sound trinkets if that makes any sense. It all clouds up the track and you lose that sound clarity you're talking about.

Don't get me wrong, this whole series with Nas is HISTORIC and the quality is top notch. But there's still another level above that I think Hit can reach. I kind of want to see him be more of a producer and less of a beatmaker. Or maybe work with another producer that can help polish and strip down each track.
