OK been a week now. Had to get some shyt of my chest coz this was one of my weirdest listening experience of all Nas' catalogue.

Last week I told my wife and kids to forget about me from thursday night to Friday morning, don't even talk to me and shyt šŸ˜šŸ˜, I was really expecting something exceptional/historical and I set my alarm at 5.45 and 6AM Friday morning to listen to the A2HH stream live with everybody. Previous night I couldn't sleep coz of anticipation and fell asleep around 3.30 something. And of course 3hrs later when the alarm rang, I fukking didn't wake up. All I know is I jumped out my bed at 6.40, already mad as hell I had missed it, log onto stationhead and they were playing Abracadra... I guess it was the second spin. I was throw off man, I felt Nas was sounding totally out of place, forcing himself on such a beat, and with simplistic sucking his own dikk rhymes, like not the Nas brags different type he does usually.

I'm not even sure they played the whole album in order but anyway... Office Hours... Nas spitting insane, but the shock of 50s voice and short verse kinda killed it for me. When Black Magic kicked in, it felt weird again. Like on Abra, the 808s hit fukking hard but the rhyming on the first verse felt very basic to me. At that point I'm having PTSD of Summer on smash and I can't think of anything else, even if the 2nd verse is much better. But I already know I'm listening to something that's way inferior to Magic.. Imagine it even makes me not like Motion on first listen coz of the hook is bugging me..

To shorten it up, the only song I really love on first listen is Slow it down. I think I played it a 2nd time in the bed, and fall back to sleep tight as hell. Wifey wakes me up later on and asks me about the album and I tell her it's a fukking letdown.

If it were another artist I might have not even gave it another listen. Butttttt, the next day we on the road for a long drive and I play it again and that's when I get a brand new listening experience. The tracks I felt were mid/bad on first listening were the ones I was rewinding the most. And when my wife said "for someone who said the album sucked u been looping it all day" šŸ˜ that's when I realized that shyt had mad replay value.

I finally accepted it couldn't be a second Magic. I had already somehow anticipated that the level couldn't be going up eternally, at some point they were gonna make an album that's not as brilliant as the previous. And I see why they took this angle, probably for that reason actually.

It's a good pause during the series, a different album from the rest, all of them are different but this one's really apart. Not mad at it, and certainly not mad if Nas keeps on working with Hit. I wouldn't say no to a couple other producers sending shyt, but I can't imagine anybody else in the market handling a full Nas album, pushing him to this level of rapping he's had for 3 years. And Hit-Boy will have my eternal respect for that.

All in all, I think I now place it slightly above KD1. Can't touch the other 3 though, IMO.

Iā€™m telling ya speechless was my all time favorite intro to a nas album. His taste in his favorites is almost exact like mine. We enjoy the same type of soundsā€¦ which is why it fukked me up how magic 2 sounded ā€œat firstā€. It was no hate but damn the way magic started had me the most hyped out of all the series.

With that said, word to @kes929

Abracadabra ringing hard regardlessā€¦.

Does anybody with knowledge of mixing and mastering know why an artist would refuse to send in raw vocals?
Yeah, I am confused by that one. All I can figure is he got gun shy about his contribution as he is notoriously insecure and redoes shyt constantly (which I think makes it sound worse and strip out the humanity but that's neither here nor there). I'm not saying this to shyt on Eminem, just stating what I know about him, he says it himself that he constantly redoes his vocals.

Good break. From what I can see from Nas at this part of his career is that he is really challenging himself to get better in certain areas that he maybe didnā€™t feel as strong initally. Some improvements that I feel like he made are flow, cadence, hooks, anthem type records for shows and mastering the modern day sound. I feel like over these 5 albums he made attempts to do things he never has before. I legit think Nas still tries to get better. I also think Nas hears and see more than we think. People said he was good at hooks so he started crushing hooks, people said he canā€™t pick beats and I donā€™t even hear people say that anymore. People said he couldnā€™t do the double time flow and now he has mastered. He is a true artist that works on his craft.

Iā€™m always surprised when people say they donā€™t like abracadabra, because man that song has been on repeat. Nas has mastered rapping over the modern sound. So if any of the younger cats want to get him on a record, he will never sound out of place.

So yā€™all believing Nas when he sayin the next album is halfway done already?

Thereā€™s no reason whatsoever to doubt him.

Remember he said KD3 was coming on Magic 1

I always thought there would be a second album this year, I just wasnā€™t sure if it would be a Premier/Hit Boy year or a Hit Boy X2 year.

Pretty sure we got our answer. Nas and Hit Boy are running the score up until Billy Mitchell gives them the muthafukking crown.

honest rating

intro- eh, wasn't necessary... first project of theirs's to open up weak 3/5
Abracadabra - again, this is weaker than king's disease, pressure, speachless and ghetto reporter 3/5
Office Hours - Was going great until 50's verse 4/5
Black Magic - The sleeper song of the project, 4.5/5
Motion- Hook was weak and the instrumental at the end was kinda amature, but good verses 3.5/5
Bokeem Woodbine - good track, except the "ouch" gets annoying 4/5
EMJ - this track is just kinda there, 3.5/5
Really Means - really good track 4.5/5
Slow It Down- best track on the album 5/5
Pistols - Nice would be closer 4.5/5
One Gun/Mic - didn't fit the album, and the second bad feature 2.5/5
