explain
this album is his american gangster.
this album is nas trying to come across as a great musical mogul and gain respect beyond the perceived shallow realm of hip-hop royalty. same thing common tried to do with dreamer/believer.
both attempts failed and both come across as stale, bland banquet tv dinners. i dont use the word "hot" to express music but this album is just not hot. its fukkin boring unless you wanna hear nas write and rap like the 40 year old he is over beats made by 40 year olds. tell me what song on this cd actually gets your blood pumpin and wanna hit the gas pedal and go make money and have fun. i cant find more than a couple.
this is what happens when rappers from the 90s try to come out with an "epic album".
im saying what everyone else is feeling but is too aprehensive to carve out in stone. only thing keepin this in anybodys tape deck is the fact that its a nas album in 2012 and the vague sense of nostalgia that goes along with it (which is enough to keep content those who just feign for anything closely resembling good old golden era hiphop with no charisma or excitability). once that wears off, this will go down as nothing special.
neg me.
Lyrically yes, I just can't stand Mary J anymore bruh. Only song I was tempted to skip even though lyrically he still did his thing
at 40, why would he focus only on "making money and having fun." he already did that, a lot of people have. this aint jersey shore, this is hip hop. people grow up with others around them, think about the things they go through, and you know, real shyt. if you cant respect that, and want to downplay it because its got real life issues, then how real are you?
no introduction got my blood pumpin the minute he started rapping....loco motive with that bass line my blood was bumpin with it....Queens story, the rawness of this track just would not stop my blood from pumpin...i can go on.....aye man u asked![]()

Channel Orange though

moreso from a quality and production standpoint.
i still have to give it a few more spins.
People saying the album is "overproduced" are full of shyt.
"Overproduction" is a problem (see some of those GOOD Music releases) where the production is so good that the emcee gets left in the background somewhere behind the sound. Nas is one of the GOAT emcees, he doesn't get over-shined by any sweeping chords.
As someone who listens to a range of hip-hop stuff that's already fused in that manner (Nujabes for example) Nas fits the production fine.
i understand this.
but you must agree hip-hop was built on the raw emotions that go along with things like money, fun, success (or the chase that goes along with getting those things). so without that, the well runs dry and out comes this album thats as exciting as a dusty old leatherbound book in grandma's sewing room.
and, all that is not to say that a hip-hop album cant be good unless its upbeat and fun.
the man is on the cover with his divorced wifes dress..
how can you expect those kinds of records with a cover like that?![]()
nas cant rap about the block and chasing cash when he has tours he organizes, money off of albums and royalties, and can go anywhere and perform old material from twenty years ago to get paid. the work has already been laid down. hes already grown. so that idea that hip hop started with the youth, and can never get beyond that needs to stop. its a culture, and its a music about people. I think him stepping up and rapping about his daughter, his marriage, his divorce, his friendships, his career, and how he made it out is all good. hes not the kind that makes a lot of good "jiggy" music anyways, he never was. you get from nas introspective, laid back personal shyt. thats all I ever expected
