You asked a nice question, i think this is the best answer:

Few years later, after Ether, there was a pretty solid narrative: Nas was pretty washed, not good enough albums and the beef brought the beast out of him again. Now as time passed they realized the more they say Nas was underdog in the beef - the better the story gets. This album paid the price for the beef legacy.
Yeah I think when Takeover came out it contributed to a narrative that resurfaced in the late 2000s that that Nas released a "one hot album every 10 year avg." But also I think it drove Illmatic to finally go platinum by 2002.

Part of the reason I started this thread, and I may make a separate thread is that there are projects that were considered great when they were released but were unfairly shytted on over a decade later to fit a internet narrative. Or even just because of bad taste in Hip Hop music, or current listeners weren't old enough to consume said album in its original context properly.

Listening to an album is influenced by the context the time it is released and the time a consumer hears it.

Takeover did nothing for illmatic. What the fukk are you talking about.

Jay stans ran with the line. Not actual hip hop heads that know their shyt.

Shawn "takeover was all facts" Carter. Yea for the gullible n easily bamboozled

Those are the only songs i skip everytime I listen to it. Otherwise, I Am is really good album and was my first introduction to Nas. It was one of the first albums my mom bought me. I didn't know until years later that there were 2 versions. I see why people were highly disappointed but I think it's still dope.

The way the intro leads into NY State of mind II is just:ahh:

I actually prefer pt.2 over the original:whoa:

Small World is one of Nas's most underrated storytelling songs. I wanna Talk To You is one of his best political songs. Undying Love is one of the best rap songs ever written and closers to an album.

Nas Is Like is a classic of course.

You Want See Me Tonight is a banger.

Nas did his thing. Too bad the original version leaked.

nikkas on here be lying. Because I been telling people for YEARS how praised I Am was. It's the very reason Nas was even able to go multiplat twice in one year when he dropped Nastradamus.

The album was critically acclaimed and one of the most commercially successful albums of 99.
The anticipation for it was huge. Nas is Like. The Bootleg.
I desperately tried to like the retail album. I gave it months. Ultimately I had to accept the fact that it wasn't anywhere near a 4.5 mic album. :mjcry:
