All I’m saying is the magazine rarely reviewed a finalised album, they usually had industry advance/promo/sampler type versions from what I’ve read in the past. So based on whatever they were given they could have been justified in giving it 4.5. Or maybe they were just a bit too gung ho with it because it was a Nas album and gave it the extra half. These days, I think the album deserves a 4 but back then I was a bit disappointed, would have said 3.5 if you asked me.
I think you’re overstating how often this happened though. They did always get an advance reviewer copy, but I think it was rare that the retail version of the album was any different.
Obviously it became more frequent once the internet hit and albums started leaking months before retail.

FOH I member ppl being pretty disappointed. give a fukk bout a Source review...shyt had some basura on there, 3/5 album

This is absolute bullshyt. There was way more criticism of it was written when it came out then it was for I AM. People looked at I Am as a nice balance between nasty and esco. There may have been some people who heard the bootleg and were disappointed that certain songs didn't make it but only a small minority of people heard those songs. When Jay mentioned on Takeover that nas had two albums that was doo and was ahhhh, I immediately thought he was speaking of it was written because that album received far more critique than I Am did. Since then, because so much of nas' fanbase came from It Was Written and people appreciate it more now, people make it seem like I Am was like this universally panned album when it really kept him with the heavyweights in the business at the time.

Does the review mention Dr Knockboots? I can’t remember which songs were added but it’s a FACT that magazines would get albums months in advance to do reviews and it’s KNOWN that the versions of I Am and Murda Muzik were heavily bootlegged and the reviews were based on the originals sent to the magazines not the retail albums.

Yes but if you remember the I Am double album was supposed to drop in 98 so there was plenty of time for the retail version of the album to be finalized and circulated prior to its release.

You asked a nice question, i think this is the best answer:

Few years later, after Ether, there was a pretty solid narrative: Nas was pretty washed, not good enough albums and the beef brought the beast out of him again. Now as time passed they realized the more they say Nas was underdog in the beef - the better the story gets. This album paid the price for the beef legacy.

Like I said before, the revision is real. The Source did not review the bootleg. It was the retail version:

Talking rubbish

Undying Love is in the running for the greatest WRITTEN hip hop track EVER. If the rest of the tracks was fart noises, that track alone makes the album 3 mics
