We pretty much knew all of this though. Only difference was that we got to see it from Itachi's POV.

Damn. Kishi followed the shounen formula with Naruto, but Itachi is one of the deepest characters in manga. Imagine being called a gentle child by your parents right before you kill them and your whole clan then your little brother walks in right after the deed is done. He was probably happy as hell to die after all of that.

I can see Sasuke pulling a Zabuza/Itachi act in the long-run by acting like a bad guy but in his heart of hearts, seeking redemption and forcing naruto into killing him out of guilt. In his dying moments he's going to mention how he came to the realization and apologizes to him. Then the readers are gonna feel all about ever hating sasuke. Face it, it's Kishi's established villain model.
