The perp wanted to kill Nancy, not Paul, so at first he was just holding Paul "until Nancy came home." Paul said he had to go to the bathroom, then grabbed his mobile which was charging in there and called 911. The perp realized something was up and interrupted the call, so Paul played it off as carefully as possible in order to try to alert police while also trying to avoid getting killed. Police arrived, finding the perp obviously a lot more agitated and restraining Paul because of what he had done, and then we see what transpired.
What part of that is even in doubt? What are you trying to prove at this point? Just because you're "both sides" doesn't mean you have to deny reality.

And you had better answer the door and keep cool if its possible that its cops, you don't have the option of not answering it if someone calls in a break in or an assault because thats just going to make the cops go in through the glass where it was broken or otherwise investigate. The only option is to answer and somehow pull off a 'misunderstanding' on the situation so they go away.
