As fiddy is a interesting artist to talk about in that era. Especially for direction.

I agree, while ultimately i think his popularity waned for the same reason all rappers who sell over 4 million records do, because the bulk of their buying power usually abandons rap music in 4 years, he fell victim to the -

"diiiiooooooodddde have you heard this new band Papa Roach??? They're fawkin thrashin' diiiiuuuuuuuudddde, huh? Nah, i dont really like rap anymore"

That said with some different choices I think ultimately he would have retained more market value than he eventually did (as a music artist I mean)

It's interesting to think how the public might have reacted to certain changes in the rollout, for instance, I think if "God Gave Me Style" is pushed as like a 3rd or 4th single then 50 stars being viewed through a different lens, and hes no longer only 1 of 2 things depending on who's vantage point is peering...hes no longer just the hip hop robocop, rittled with bullets, killed and built back up with titanium as Robothug or the equally un-nuanced Viacom darling "yesssir Jimmy the hitmaker" which, dont get me wrong, hes worn both of those costumes, but as someone who has been aware of 50 since 97 JMJ era DJ Enuff doing Jam a favor era to the "oh shyt that's that dude from those Enuff tapes on the new Onyx joint" I view 50 differently than those who became aware with the Aftermath signing or even those first 2 G Unit mixtapes, lest we forget (my personal despise for him aside) KRS1 is 50 favorite rapper, so in short I think 50 was always capable of being whatever kind of rapper prototype he wanted to be.

Plus it gives g unit radio more legs. As the lead singles being on g unit radio. Changed the fan perception of g unit radio as a supplement.

Do you mean the GU Radio mixtapes or the serius FM thing? I never had Sirius so the extent I know about that era is really just Whoo Kid laughing too loud at things that aren't funny from YouTube clips years later

When fiddy made disco inferno and the olivia record the launch singles. It took away from g-uniit radio. As well as the lead dre single impact. on fiddy career long term.

As moving to an rnb collab based lead single. Plus a bet uncut style lead single in disco inferno. Made the fan perception of an afyermath artist too accessible. When the viacom darling artist on interscope. Was never accessible without that aire of mystery. By making the lead singles on massacre bet unct and rnb collab singles. It took away the mystique of fiddy as a lead solo draw.

Yeah I dont disagree with that synopsis, I think the result was have decisions and half inevitability tho, but will concede in the decisions end the made errors with the single choices.

Talent bar for bar is subjective from my worldview or hip hop worldview to be specific, I do give points to a certain extent for multisylabic, big bird big word rap to a degree but I give more points for whats being said and how uniquely it's being said, think Khujo on Cell Therapy to understand what I really mean by that.

I'd have to relisten to EPGH with a more recent ear but from memory I recall that album needing an archaeologist hip hop ear, meaning brush away some of the layers of dirt to really see how rare a fossil was found.

I was just taking about Illegal Business a few days ago with my sister. My favorite track is Pimp shyt, her’s is My Opinion.

On Pimp shyt, Mac Mall has the best verse technically, but something about Mac Dre’s verse that I just like better. Rapping from the jail phone actually added to the song IMO

It’s All Good has the hardest beat.

Endless dollars was recorded around the same time, but didn’t get released until years later. I don’t know if it was meant for Illegal Business and didn’t make the cut, but it’s one of my favorite songs from both Mall and Khayree. Khayree had a crazy run of production during this era.



On Bay Area albums in that era, RBL’s Ruthless By Law, 11/5’s Fiendin 4 tha Funk, and San Quinn’s Live N Direct are all personal favorites/classics to me.

Illegal Business is such a goddamn classic that I rushed to get anything Mac and Khayree did together since and have been for the most part upset (Illegal business 2000 and The Rebellion against all we are or whatever the fukk it was called)

The War Report at one point was my favorite album, and it's still in my top 10...idk if anyone else has this particular album this high, but y'all probably have a different album that's classic/personal classic in your top 5-10 range that others wouldn't think to ever have that high.
