BAE and another African player talk about not feeling French despite being born there.

but they're "French", right?

Benoît Assou-Ekotto and Sébastien Bassong attack France race quotas

Benoît Assou-Ekotto: 'I play for the money. Football's not my passion'

Assou-Ekotto is beginning to look ahead to the World Cup finals with Cameroon. Although he was born in France and has a French mother, there has never been any issue over his allegiance. Like many young people in France born to an immigrant parent or parents, he feels that "the country does not want us to be part of this new France. So we identify ourselves more with our roots.

"Me playing for Cameroon was a natural and normal thing. I have no feeling for the France national team; it just doesn't exist. When people ask of my generation in France, 'Where are you from?', they will reply Morocco, Algeria, Cameroon or wherever.

Being born in America doesn't make me AA. My parents are from the islands...

Simple as that.

But in that same article, he respects Lennon and Defoe who say their English.

But what has amazed me in England is that when I ask the same question of people like Lennon and Defoe, they'll say: 'I'm English.' That's one of the things that I love about life here."

Well now we're moving beyond football to the experiences shared by immigrant/ethnic minorities the world over; I reject the term "African-American" cause we got off the ship way before most white pop's ancestors here, but many times I feel like a stateless person here. Such is life, I suppose ....

Can someone explain why we NEVER see African born English players make the national team or do well in club football? It's like they only allow half caste to play. Where are the Ghanian-British, Nigerian British or Kenyan British in club football or the national team? It's the opposite in France. Hmmmmmm

Most of them choose to play for their country of birth instead of playing for England. They represent England at the U17 to U21 then switch over to represent their country of birth or parents country of birth.

Danny Welbeck was born in England but could have represented Ghana.

With England it's the other way round, we get the African born players who grew up in England and gone thru the academies of the clubs to play for England at youth level and then for various reasons, end up playing for the country of their birth.

Zaha did play for England twice, but between his inconsistent form and incompetent nature of England's selection process. He decided to play for Ivory Coast.

Victor Moses would of played for England, as he was one of England's best players at youth level but once again incompetent selection process.

Iwobi, I would say his situation is a tad different, because his Uncle is a Nigeria god, so while he played for England at youth level, his lineage and destiny was to play for Nigeria.

I will say this tho, while Moses and Zara both shined at youth levels for England, it took them a while to find consistency in their game playing at club level, especially when they were playing week in, week out for smaller teams.

Yannick Bolasie who is London as fukk, was born in France and plays for DRC, the land of his parents.

Thanks for the explanation and I see what you are saying but Zaha, Moses and Iwobi all weren't born in England. While Zouma, Pogba, Kante, Matuidi, Conman, Mendy, Sissoko, Bakayoko and Dembélé were all born to Africans parents in France, made it through the French system and into the national team.

I think the difference can be explained through culture. The English FA only want English or half caste players representing England, since England doesn't rely on its former colonies economic, political and military success while France does. The French see Africans as subordinates to the "greater" French success.
