So all we really learned about the Knicks last night was that they're not ready for the top tier teams and that they're still trash on the second night of a back to back regardless of the situation. Want to see great game planning though? How about keeping Melo away from face-up situations and then sending hard doubles along the baseline since he always makes his move in that direction? Put the worst defender on Courtney Lee who sees less touches and is less likely to attack his man...and meticulous stuff too, everyone on the Cavs knew to soft close on Lance because it baits him into a pump fake, dribble drive where his vision is so bad he HAS to force something at the rim. The Cavs were well coached, Bron was Bron and our guys were lethargic and sloppy...no statement made, Chauncey Billups gets to be his usual salty self and Jalen Rose keeps fishing for sound bytes. I said it last back to back and I'll say it again, Jeff shoulda pulled a Pop and benched some guys; but to be fair, that's hard to do when you're in a winning streak that put you over .500...though that's why I'd have respected it more.
BJ: It's hard to tell if he's the answer to offensive stagnation when the team is so lazy; but 3 ASTs to 3 TO's was not what I expected from BJ running with KP, Melo and Lee...though running should probably be "trotting" in reference to last night. The Cavs forced BJ to be an aggressor and to be fair, he responded better than most with 16 points on 6-14 shooting. 16, 3 with 4 boards and as pedestrian as that stat line is, he was one of our better starters.
Lee: He was our best starter and that right there is pretty much gonna mean a loss any time it happens. He's here to play D and be solid, which he was but Lee isn't gonna carry us to many wins. 3 of 7 from three, 5 of 10 overall for 15 points and he tallied 5 assists, 2 steals. This dude took advantage of Irving being a weak defender and earned his money last night which is more than we can say for almost anyone else.
Melo: Didn't really press the issue to be fair...he just had no energy and faced a good defensive scheme right after he put the offense on his back a night ago. 8 points on 9 attempts, 0-2 from 3, 2 assists to 3 TO's and 4 boards. The most respectable thing about him last night was that on multiple occasions he tried to switch onto Lebron and shoulder that load; but it was obviously not the gameplan because twice the defense was in disarray on this and a third time Lee had to sprint to Melo's guy...so not smart but respectable. Anyway, at this point I see absolutely no evidence to play Melo on the second night of a back to back and the scary thing is last time it took him almost a week to recover. Thankfully his minutes were cut by the blowout...God that's sad to type.
KP: Didn't really have legs like he normally does but did have some fire, as evidenced by a hard foul on Lebron early...Bron had a full head of steam too, 95% of players back down in that moment. Here's the thing though, he focused WAY too much on Bron and it was damn near crippling to the defense. On fast break defense, there's a situation where a 2-1 forces a defender to pick one player to stop. A lot of guys will try to float in the middle and it just leaves every option open for the ball handler and 99 times out of 100 it means easy buckets. KP was putting himself in no-man's land on HALF COURT SETS with every other man covered. Love missed more open three point attempts than he made and the early ones created the hole that the Knicks had no chance to dig themselves out of. I get why KP would hone in on taking the lane away from the best player in the league, but it was detrimental to the team defense and got him lit up. 12 points on 15 attempts, no assists, just 3 boards in 30 minutes and you can have those 2 blocks back if it comes at the expense of wide open three point shots for your man. KP's young, he'll learn, but this is a game where he should be in the film room for hours dissecting all the mistakes he made.
Noah: I'm not gonna kill him for last night; you could see him TRYING. He had bursts of energy that led to 6 boards in 15 minutes; 2 of 3 from the field and a couple of assists. The thing is those bursts gave way to fatigue which meant a lazy pass getting picked off, Tristan owning him on the boards and a general inability to impact anything. That Jeff left him out there too long on a game he played just 15 minutes is scary stuff considering his contract; but that's not on this dude...he's trying at least.
Sasha: Our back-up PG did some nice ball movement things at times, but decided to call his own number a couple of times when we were sorta gaining a smidgeon of momentum and it killed that slither of a prayer on those attempts. Now that he was full court pressing guys with fresher legs (by virtue of being in there earlier), he got torched the way we remember from last season when he had meaningful minutes. He didn't show any reason to trust him to fill in at PG when Rose or Jennings is out which exposes a major hole on the roster.
Holiday: Made a three, grabbed 4 boards, had an assist and a steal in 14 minutes out there. He also played solid D though Bron was too strong when they matched up. One of the few guys with a solid performance.
Lance: The answer to shutting Lance down is a soft close when he receives the ball in the corner. He's useless everywhere else on offense and if you make him dribble, he'll usually force something up no matter what. One of his 2-5 makes was a terrible shot selection with Holiday wide open, the other I believe came on tip out but I could be mistaken (in which case he bricked that one). He did provide 2 boards which is pretty much more than I expect from him in 14 minutes because of his awful hands. After finally having a good game, he went right back to being the guy we want benched for Kuz.
KOQ: He should have been in there sooner when the game was still sort of competitive...specifically in the third when the game REALLY got blown open. 21 mins, 5 of 7, 10 points, 7 boards, 3 assists to 1 TO and the only positive +/- on the team. His case for starting is made at this point. 17 million dollars be damned, this guy has earned it.
Willy: Not sure why his statline says 0 TO's because he definitely had a travel when he first got out there but he was also solid. Willy made a three pointer from the wing which was interesting and he almost pulled another from the corner but thought twice. He was 2-5 but also drew 4 FT's and wound up scoring 9 points in his 15 minutes. He added 7 boards and a steal too in that short span. Find this kid minutes and keep him developing, because when he gets minutes he gives you something and he'll only get better.
Baker: 7 attempts in 10 minutes is too much when you're tasked as the PG; I don't care if it's a glorified summer league game at that point. Baker did have a good grasp of the offense though and used screens pretty well, but he shot poorly even on good looks. Maybe it was nerves or a lack of reps recently, but he wasn't on his game. Defensively, I was much happier with his performance and that's the predicament. Sasha is better offensively as long as Ron is shooting that much and missing that much; but Baker is far and away a better defensive player even as an inexperienced rookie with questionable lateral speed.
Ndour: We got the patented one dribble into a midrange pull up that bricks. We didn't get any passes through his hands because Baker wasn't about to rifle any passes through the Cavs busy defense. Ndour had a rebound, an assist and a steal in 10 minutes but for the most part he was pretty much the invisible man out there against scrubs.
Random: I thought Bron and the starters playing flip the water bottle was a combination of petty, corny (are adults doing that ish because only my young nieces and nephews seem into that meme) and insulting...not insulting to the Knicks, they didn't do anything worth respect but insulting to the Cavs bench players that were out there trying to make a statement and show they belong. Felder was playing HARD, Jones was shooting like this might be his last few minutes for the next month and Birdman still plays with more energy than most young guys; they deserved attention and support, not the sideshow. Maybe I'm salty, but I just don't picture Magic, Bird, Zeke, Jordan or any of the guys I watched as a leader pulling that ish and if we had an Oakley on the squad Bron could expect to be in the fifth row before the end of the first quarter next time they played.
Note that I left Jeff out the breakdown...I think he was bad and I don't want to unload on dude because he's been solid and it was a second night of a back to back without Rose...so I'ma go Thumper, nothing nice to say status.
