Phil inherited a dumpster fire and led off by saying it'd be years before he could implement everything he wanted (this is important imo, understanding that it's a process to build something sustainable over short term hype). There are obvious mistakes, the Chandler deal could have been a lot better (especially if he takes Crowder) and I'm not optimistic about the Noah deal at that length and amount; but there are also moves that he made with the long term in mind. He's been manufacturing cap space and building incrementally since letting the squad bottom out, but the two things that keep him promising are that he's managed to preserve enough cap space to keep adding to the core each offseason so far and he's managed to add youth in a period where most of our picks were dealt before he even got in. So we've got all our future 1st round picks, a much younger roster than when he began, one of the most promising young players in the league and near max cap space for the second consecutive year. He basically bottomed the team out, improved them from unwatchable to bad and now they should fall anywhere from mediocre to pretty good this season but with multiple avenues to improve the team and a few players locked in that can develop and grow. In a lot of places, that's not a great endorsement at all, but having witnessed Layden, Thomas and Grunwald throw away picks and cap space so recklessly; he's easily the best GM we've had in a long while and the team's direction is positive imo.
