After some self reflection I really feel bad for her. While her degree was in English she only had 25k in loans. That actually is easy to deal with.

She would’ve been better off single and just hustling.
Theres spots in texas payin 50k a year for new teachers. She coulda lived in a 1 bedroom appt n lived frugal n had that 25k paid off in 3 years

I thought you could refinance/consolidate all your loans and after 20 years they’ll be forgiven.

I got an uncle who did that.
If you have multiple student loans you may be able to combine them into one loan with a fixed interest rate based on the average of the interest rates on the loans being consolidated.
Since they're married I wonder if they would be able to to that. :jbhmm:

i want to offer the "timeless wisdom" :troll: of setting appropriate ANCHORS

see, you need to have ANCHORS in order to navigate and set a course of action
in other words, an expectation.. an anticipated reward
to justify the risk, effort, time, and resources consumed in the endeavor

example-:usure:
when person A with attributes B does action C in timeframe D,
experiencing a discomfort/exertion level of E,
is he/she likely to get a result somewhere between F and G??

^^you have to do your homework and fill in the blanks
then.. does it make any sense??
do i possess those attributes??
do i have that amount of time to dedicate to the endeavor??
am i willing to be that uncomfortable??

now here is a real world example of doing it WRONG
yung old timer :troll:was in his last semester before becoming an engineer
interviewing, working on my senior project, etc
it was really a blast :troll:
so i go to my mailbox and there was something called an envelope
and back then, thin envelopes were a one page rejection letter
and thick envelopes were a job offer with some extra information
and i got a thick envelope from a company i was excited about..
and i did my :jordanoverehlo: right there at the mailbox
rip it open and...and.. it is 75% of my expected number

skipping a few cringeworthy temper tantrums..
i go to career services for them to reveiw my "counter proposal" :mjlol:
and i met with the old white guy who dealt with engineering types :ld:
and he told me-- "the market is down a little.. you guys aren't going to do as well as last year's batch.."
and he sat there (figuratively) holding my hand
pointing out i had no internships, etc.
pointing out the market, the geographies, etc
the point being, it actually was a good/"more than fair" offer.. one i was unlikely to improve upon
and i would be a complete retard to send off that half-assed letter i was cooking up

so i did the "right" thing and accepted the offer
and i moved to houston and started the job
but i never wanted to be there.. it never felt right.. i had a chip on my shoulder etc

i was ANCHORED to X but i had to "settle for" 75% of X
...but-- where had i got "X" from,, anyway??

from an engineer who helped me as a teenager.. who one time.. off the cuff.. said something like
"in a few years, it wouldn't be out of the question for you to graduate and start with a salary of X"
i didn't hear the qualifiers.. i didn't follow up and crank numbers for my circumstances
..i just ANCHORED myself to X
and i doubled down.. repeating "X" as the salary I could expect
telling other people that number
telling MYSELF that number..
i had ANCHORED myself to an improbable expectation

like i said, anchors are necessary to evaluate possibilities
even after you commit to a course of action
the field can shift.. the economy can tick up or down..
your energies/abilities can improve or decline
so the plan might need to be adjusted..

but you can't keep doubling and tripling down ad infinitum

view your life from the third person every now and then
"does what i am doing make any sense??"
"is the adversity bringing out the best or the worst of me??"
etc

okay, time to hit the post reply button :troll:

She studied English, then doubled down with a Master's. He studied a pure science and didn't go all the way to a PhD. Didn't even pick a more applicable science like computer science.

This has less to do with education and more to do with their poor choices in what to study. If your goal is employment opportunities then engineering, computer science, medicine, accounting and nursing are right there.

Talmbout English and biology, then doubling down with useless Master's degrees.:stopitslime:

Might sound bold but I have no sympathy for them. The girl in the story makes it seem like they are the only ones struggling to pay back student loans. I went to school on pell grants alone because I knew I couldn't afford to pay back any loans. I still got a degree and couldn't get a job in my field.

As to how they racked up $718K student debt is crazy. Going to college doesn't guarantee anything. College is institution to hustle young adults into crushing debt for yrs after graduation.

This is why minorities need to get off that “trying to be white” mentality cause mommy and daddy will foot the bill and let them stay home stack bread plus some families have friends in high places that’ll put them on fresh out. My friends trying to get into teaching complain all the time about white girls fresh out getting positions cause they have family workin there already

@1LurkerChick9 ....

You're gonna neg me without making your case...and yes most of the time people who owe debt from student loans have used the money outside of school related purposes.... which is why they're so caught up.

What other reasons would they be deep in debt if they were using the money for what it was for??

If you can't afford to pay back loans...then don't take any... it's that simple :coffee:.

That's the problem right there, people taking money they wouldn't be able to pay back... it's called a "loan" for a reason.

She might have her LCSW, my wife is an LMSW and she makes right around 60k

So does my girl. She's a few hours from sitting for her LCSW-C exam. She works in the psychiatric ward at a hospital. She makes good money and is a hustler, she wants to open her own practice on the side. :ehh:

It ain't always the major, it's the mentality.
