Doing a rewatch of the first two animated ones with my mom today.

God-damn Lion King 1 hits as hard as I first watched it as a kid :wow: :mjcry:

James Earl Jones sets the tone right away. The whole scene when Simba finds Mufasa dead hits so hard in the feels :mjcry:.

The theme of facing the past is something that adults can relate to and is an important lesson for kids.

Man Scar was a great villain in this. Everything was under his manipulation from the very start. Even when Simba came back, he had had with guilt in the palm of his hands. But his pride was his weakness. Against Mufasa, he said, long live the king. Against Simba, he had to taunt him that he killed his father. Simba wasn't for dead, being the difference.

Though Scar trying to manipulate everyone bite him in the ass. The hyenas would aid him in fighting Simba, but they heard him and were like, we can't trust this bytch.

Good but still an unnecessary sequel, wish it didn't cut back and forth between the past and present throughout, should have just started out with modern day in the intro then go from there

Honestly, Lion King 2: Simba's Pride is pretty solid. And does hold up on its own. It is obviously not of the same quality as 1. Like 1 is a 10 and 2 is prob an 8/10. Low-key, impressive since the first doesn't offer much room for a sequel.

I liked the two storylines

  1. Simba and how he is as a ruler.
  2. The Romeo and Juliet storyline of Kiara and Kovu.
The biggest headline is that Simba is not Mufasa. Even as a ruler, Simba is a flawed character. He is overly protective of Kiara when you compare to Mufasa as a father, he would scold Simba, but expect him to learn. Simba doesn't put Kiara in a position to learn from her mistakes. Of course, a lot of it makes sense because of Scar's betrayal, there is no wonder has big trust issues. Though it is very fitting that he didn't fully understand some of the words, his father, and it took his daughter for him to understand we are one.

One weakness of this is that we didn't have Scar's clan in the first movie. But I do like the idea of Kovu feeling the pressure to live to what Scar's clan thought of Scar. But he was told to hate and want to kill Simba. He would aim to do that, but as he got closer to Kiara, he changed his mind. Kind of understanding his mother and the others are wrong. I do think the scene involving Kovu's brother missed the mark because they tried to align of events similar to the first 1 too hard.

Zira obviously is not as manipulative as Scar as a villain. Since we never saw her in 1 it is difficult to make of her relationship to Scar. Her motives of protecting her clan are clear to understand. Part of it works because Simba outcasting them is a wrong and part of Simba's development.

With all that said, in terms of sequels, this is where the series should end. Tbh if they make any movies after the Mufasa Prequel it will come as a red flag.

Honestly, it was pretty decent. Though, I just feel a lot of soul and charm is missing, just since it wasn't animated. Also, the movie was 2 hours long and honestly feels like if you count down on the "present" moments. Have the film be closer to 90 mins and you got something people will really like. I do love the ending to this movie and the fact that Musfasa doesn't banish Scar, but just the name of Taka. Kind of shows the one weakness Musfasa had, and it is that weakness that gets him killed. Though, him uniting everyone was a great way to end things.

I'd rate it 6/10.
