I think the thread is confusing two things.
Tony was a racist, murderous, petty piece of shyt, but "The Sopranos" fan base was
at the idea of him dying in the finale.
By the end of "Breaking Bad" 269 people died either directly or indirectly due to Walt's arc.
As viewers we've been hard wired to cheer for the protagonist.There is a lot of factors that make this even easier, IE great writing, acting, charisma, etc.
Does that mean you'd hang out with Tony or Walt? Hell no. Why?
Because they're unlikable.
Hell, a decent chunk of the board is black so they wouldn't be able to hang out with Tony just based on that. But do you still want to watch him? Of course.
As long as the character is interesting, that's all that matters.
