I think the thread is confusing two things.
Tony was a racist, murderous, petty piece of shyt, but "The Sopranos" fan base was
at the idea of him dying in the finale.
By the end of "Breaking Bad" 269 people died either directly or indirectly due to Walt's arc.
As viewers we've been hard wired to cheer for the protagonist.There is a lot of factors that make this even easier, IE great writing, acting, charisma, etc.
Does that mean you'd hang out with Tony or Walt? Hell no. Why? Because they're unlikable.
Hell, a decent chunk of the board is black so they wouldn't be able to hang out with Tony just based on that. But do you still want to watch him? Of course.
As long as the character is interesting, that's all that matters.

Walter White was the reason people watched Breaking Bad. He was far from unlikable. Sure he was despicable and a shyt person but people still liked the character. Jesse Pinkman is an example of an unlikable character not Walter White. Nobody liked that guy period. People watched hoping he'd be killed off.
Exactly, a couple of dudes in this thread are confusing "bad" or "criminal" for "unlikable". I fukking hate Jesse Pinkman

Again, you're getting "interesting" mixed up with "likable".
People like Walt because he's a great character. He's interesting. People cheer for him to win for the same reason people didn't want Tony Soprano to die.
Does that mean you'd want either of them living next door to you? No. Why? Because they're unlikable.
Hell, more recently people in the "Jessica Jones" thread are
over how great Kilgrave is. People like the character....despite the fact that he's a sociopath and a rapist. It's 2015, it's ok to admit you like or cheer for characters that are horrible people.
