If we are talking about at the Box Office, the big one is John Carpenter's THE THING in 1982. John Carpenter pushed out some pure piff in 1980's but Hollywood never seemed to back him up.

With the THE THING though, it ran 2 weeks AFTER E.T. and people thought the film didn't have a happy ending, and it was too dark, nihilistic because they contrasted it to the happy nature of E.T.. Yet along with Halloween, that movie has become so ingrained in Horror.

Even now with Among Us being such a big hit in gaming, it pays homage to what that movie had the balls to do.

Found out that Warrior the Tom Hardy MMA movie from 2011 flopped, not saying it deserves a sequel or anything but I thought this movie was universally praised or was that just all in my head?

This was a GREAT film and criminally underrated. It was advertised as a sports action flick but really it was more of a sports drama.

Sucks that it flopped because it was very emotional and legit made me cry due to the inner turmoil of the three main characters. It also illustrated how alcoholism can affect people's lives.

Here's another one.
Equlibrium:

Everyone assumed it would be a low budget Matrix ripoff.

Solid film and good acting by Bale. I didn't think it was a Matrix Ripoff

It was filmed kind of like something you'd see on the USA Network in the afternoon though.

There are a lot of movies like this that are considered classics now that were flops (both critically and financially) at the time they were released.

Willy Wonka, Hocus Pocus, Its A Wonderful Life, Wizard of Oz, Heathers, Office Space, Citizen Kane were all box office flops.
