50 is fine for a family flick... by the time me, my girl, and kids hit the theater i end up spending more than 50 anyway.

Studios would actually make money from this because they don't have to share with theaters but they wouldn't make that much because of piracy unless they figure out a way to stop someone from ripping it

Apple patents tech to let cops switch off iPhone video, camera and wi-fi

Police forces around the world have had the problem that when their officers get a bit carried away and start pepper spraying tied captives there is someone on hand filming the event on their mobile phones.

While six police lay into prone grannies on the floor with long batons, the pictures can be on the net in seconds, meaning supervisors have to answer embarrassing questions.

But they may not need to fear scrutiny much longer – Apple has patented a piece of technology which would allow government and police to block transmission of information, including video and photographs, whenever they like.

All the coppers have to do is decide that a public gathering or venue is deemed “sensitive”, and needs to be “protected from externalities” and Apple will switch off all its gear.

The police can then get on with the very difficult task of kettling protesters without having to worry about a few beating anyone to death.

Apple insists that the affected sites are mostly cinemas, theatres, concert grounds and similar locations, but it does admit that it could be used in “covert police or government operations which may require complete ‘blackout’ conditions”.

According to RT it could also be used to prevent whistleblowers like Edward Snowden from taking pictures and broadcasting them on the interent.

Apple said that the wireless transmission of sensitive information to a remote source is one example of a threat to security.

But it said that this sensitive information could be anything from classified government information to questions or answers to an examination administered in an academic setting.

Apple patented the means to transmit an encoded signal to all wireless devices, commanding them to disable recording functions.

The policies would be activated by GPS, and wi-fi or mobile base-stations, which would ring-fence (“geofence”) around a building or a “sensitive area” to prevent phone cameras from taking pictures or recording video.

Odd that the company made famous by its 1984 Big Brother video can’t really see what it is doing. Perhaps its own secretive culture and an overzealous security treatment of its staff have fostered sympathy for Big Brother after all.

This will never be profitable as long as piracy is a thing.

Making a movie that's in theaters more expensive to watch and easier to pirate is going to shift people to piracy and less likely to go to a theater.

Because now they can get Blu Ray quality movies from theater at home, without paying the 15$ or 50$ to watch it.

It's also going to destroy opening weekend sales where studios make about 80% of their earnings from the movie.

Now if it was a subscription service like Netflix it may work. But people aren't going to pay on a movie by movie basis.

They gotta be careful though because this could ruin the film industry or at least certain aspects of it.

I wonder though, if Netflix said we can give you movies on Netflix while they are also in theater but we have to increase the subscription rate by 10$ making it 20$ a minth, would people agree or unsub. Maybe give ppl a choice and call it Netflix premium but I don't think that will work. In order to ensure a profit I think it would have to be all or nothing. Netflix still has very good exclusive content so I think people would still pay. I would also think Netflix would add in more features too to add more value to the deal.

Piracy just shows you that the price is higher than it should be.
YOu will never stomp it out, but as you see with the success of itune, spotify, apple music, the music industry , which claimed piracy would kill it, is making more profit than ever.
They have distribution systems already setup privately, studios were smart they would charge Netflix and Hulu and other content suppliers a fee to show it, and then charge them over the top higher fee on top of Netflix, like a netflix or hulu premium overhead service to buy the movie. This way they get the money upfront from the various distrubutors and get money on top of that for the early viewing window charge. You set the price right and people will flock to it and you will get bread. Content is the king, not locking it down.

You might be able to secure your budget or atleast half the budget with these deals on just content rights for the movie window.
