:rudy:

black on both sides is a classic but c'mon man

What you mean "come on?" :upsetfavre:
I would put Hip Hop, Love, Speed Law, Umi Said, Know That, Mathematics up against ANY Biggie Smalls song. Biggie had a better flow (of course), but Mos Def had waaaay more substance and variety.
And just for the lolz, lets face another fact -- Biggie had one of the gayest lines in Hip Hop history as well.
Lets not act like this nikka didnt get the :snoop: face when he dropped this line...

"When I met you I admit my first thoughts was to trick /You look so good hun, I'd suck on your daddy's dikk (yeah)/" - Me and My bytch

 Even on True Magic and The New Danger, Mos Def had never written no BS like that.

It's all a matter of opinion, but let's be real here...

Mos was a very good MC that dropped some very good albums... but let's leave it there. And no album with Talib Kweli on it will ever be better than a BIG album, unless we're talkin' about them put-together shyts Puff put out.

I think a lot of this "BIG wasn't that nice" shyt is coming from people who just don't get it cause they weren't there, or didn't even get it then because they were rooting for someone else. One of the words in the thread title is "potential", right? When BIG was on top, potential had nothing to do with it, he was there. He had songs that were huge on the street level, the mixtape level, the radio level, the club level... all across the board. This is what I think people neglect to realize about that time and why he was/is seen as a king of his era. Lots of rappers, even the great ones like Prodigy, Ghostface, etc. weren't doing THAT. If you wanna talk about who had iller multi's and shyt, fine, give it to Mos... but BIG as an MC just had IT. Not just sales and popularity, but could've gotten on a track with ANYONE in that time and shined lyrically. He's only on a "pedestal" now because in honesty, he was already on it before he died. It's not some Big L shyt where a bunch of late muhfukkas popped up and tried to anoint him as a great after he died... he was running shyt THEN.

Truthfully I don't think Mos Def himself would co-sign this thread. He himself ranks Biggie as a GOAT.

Absolutely love both lps but ready to die is special to me since it was the first rap album I became obsessed with. I would give RTD the edge based on the fact it's probably the most well rounded rap album I've ever heard, and it's more accessible. It's songs are truly timeless, they don't get old to me ever it's crazy. No album has ever had that effect on me. To me, it's the perfect mixture of hardcore and mainstream, it has gangster songs, radio songs, storytelling songs, personal songs, radio songs, and straight hip hop rhymin records. The production from Easy Mo Bee n premier is some of the best and most classic from that particular era. It also had a huge impact on bringing the focus of hip hop back to the east coast when the west was killing it. Top 5 rap albums of all time IMO of course.

Your reign on the top was short like leprechauns
As I crush so-called willies, thugs, and rapper-dons
Get in that ass, quick fast, like ramadan
Its that rap phenomenon Don-Dadda, fukk Poppa
You got ta, call me, Francis M.H. White
in tank-light totes, tote iron
Was told in shootouts, stay low, and keep firin
Keep extra clips for extra shyt
Who's next to flip, on that cat with that grip on rap
The mo shady, "Tell em!", Frankie baby

biggie was more advanced with rhyme patterns then mos def

But Biggs worst album is a lot better than any Mos best album.
Showing potential and being the man are different things.

Not to drag down mos cause he's obviously top 30 or top 20.
But A lot of cats show potential only a few deliver classics on that other level and influence every single rapper.

This.

Now that's just bad judgement. Thats not even Biggie's best track. fukking...even MEMPHIS BLEEK (yes I'm going there) has better songs than Juicy.

"Juicy" is most ironic than anything Mos has every spit, this is coming from a Mos Fan by the way. Also people love to bring up the "Me and My B!tch" line, Big was paying homage to the Legendary Richard Pryor with that line and the song is called "Me and My B!tch" it's about a male and female relationship. It's funny Big does a song about a relationship but dudes want to focus on line meant to be taking as a joke. It's obvious the line worked cause people are still talking about it all these years later. Here's the original Pryor standup:

(Joke starts at 4:50 about Richard talking about how fine this girl was)

Also if you look at what Big said:

"You look so good, I'd suck on your daddy's dikk, I NEVER FELT THAT WAY IN MY LIFE, wouldn't take long before I made you my wife."

It was a play on words folks. Nothing to see here.

Heaven on Earth
How is it NY bias when they are both from Brooklyn?

If anything it's fans and media being victims of radio and music video channel conditioning....
