No one is saying gays suffered equivalently to blacks. The point of speech was to highlight the fact that the discriminatory and hate-driven rhetoric used to malign gays is almost the exact same as the discriminatory and hate-driven rhetoric that was used to malign blacks. So people should see this and use wiser judgment and more empathy. That is all.

But don't make this into some, "oh yeah just like segregation crap". The bible doesn't say anything about segregation or black people.

Maybe we should force jews and muslims to eat pork? Or pester Hindus until they conform to American norms and eat steaks and burgers?

This is such a clownish analogy that I'm not sure why I'm responding to it. No one wants to trample on religious people's rights to their ignorant bigotry. This is a secular nation, though, and religious prejudices can't be the law of the land.

The proper analogies to religious people trying to make gay marriage illegal here would be if Hindus were campaigning to make beef illegal, and if Jews and Muslims were campaigning to make pork illegal.
