I think most people do keyword research to see what niches are popular and stuff their listings with those keywords. It's not about what's most popular BTW, that just means lots of competition. It's nuanced and I don't know a lot myself, but Google 'Merch Informer' blog.

No, as stated above I still haven't put any work into it
Just no motivation, been working an internship making $42/hr this summer (no e-brag, I'll be broke as soon as I pay tuition soon). I'll put work in starting September probably. I do feel it's one of those things where the vast majority make ~$0 and a few outliers make tons of money, but that's just a guess.
