Yes and No. Yes white people created colorism thru white supremacy. Since white is viewed in America as being better than black then the closer you are to white the better you will be viewed. However, America was unique in the sense that it did not differentiate black people EXPLICITLY by skin tone. So we don't have laws in our books that treated light skin black people better than dark skin black people. We don't have a history of mixed communities being distinct from black communities. American history shows that light skin and dark skin black people were treated the same by the law and they were forced to live in the same segregated communities away from white people.

Colorism is the result of black people internalized this notion of white supremacy and in turn began to view those in their community who looked closer to whiteness as better. I have gotten more compliments from black people (in particular black women) for my skin tone and hair texture than white people. White people just view me as black. Nothing more. Its only in the black community that I become light skin. And its only black women that used to compliment me when I was younger about my hair texture or skin tone. Colorism is black people internalizing white supremacy. It does not involve how white people treat us. White people view us all as the same.
