Mavericks will offer Luka Doncic the 5-year $200M rookie extension once free agency begins

Would you have any hesitation on Luka?

I'd take one in the draft or let Kira Lewis Jr. see if he can be the guy to replace him (former lottery pick). My one hesitation with Lonzo and giving him that much is that he's completely useless on offense if the 3pt shot isn't falling for him. His offensive numbers are rather ugly if his shot just isn't falling lol.

Not someone that I'd want to invest $25 million per season in. As he'll never be more than a #3 option (at best) on a championship team. Even young guys in the league are coming in with better offensive games than Lonzo and he's 4 years in lol.

Yeah, unless he takes a leap offensively in driving and scoring, my max offer would be 20 a year.

Yeah that happened with KAT (that’s why I used him as a reference) to and it still wasn’t 200 million

You can still get it a year in to your rookie extension if you make All-NBA Team. Bam theoretically could get the extra bump in $30+ million, but he's more than likely not going to make All-NBA Team this year.

Anything over $20 million and I'd say no. I just don't think he will ever become that type of offensive player as we would have seen some flashes of it if the potential was there. Even Lamelo has a better offensive game already than Lonzo.

You can force your way into free agency, which Greg Monroe did where the original team wouldn't be able to match offers. Too much money to turn down though that's why no one has ever done it.
You can try, but if you're a franchise talent, you're not going anywhere.

That means it would make no sense to reject a super max offer because if hypothetically Luka wanted to leave, he has no choice and he'd get even less money. If you're good, you're gonna stay with the team that drafted you a minimum of 7 seasons.

yup, and the fact your team can match makes it kinda useless.

If you are good, you staying with your original team for at least 7 years

Nahhh you can make it happen if you really wanted to. You'd just have to sign the qualifying offer on the table and then you can become a restricted free agent the year after. Greg Monroe (former top 10 pick) did the exact thing with Detroit. Took the one year offer and signed in Milwaukee for $60 million the season after.

It fukks over the original team as it's essentially difficult to get equal value for that player with them still being on their rookie contract. No one has ever turned down a max rookie extension, so that's why a lot of people don't think that it can ever be done.

KAT was an all nba third team member before the extension kicked in. I’m just shocked we went to 158 to 200 million since 2019

first extension after rookie deal always gets signed if you are good

What three clowns voted No:gucci:
Ain't no Serbians in Texas. Luka needs to give the Lakers a look. He's gonna end up like Dirk did on a bunch of bad teams. The one time he got on a good team Cuban blew it up instead of going for the repeat.

That dumbass Bill Simmons said on his podcast last night that Luka should play out next season and become a unrestricted free agent.

Dude is a basketball historian but he is far removed from his glory day's. Reyn be killing him on Sunday nights.

Anyway, let me read this thread

That means he would have $190 million instead of $158 million. I'm seeing conflicting numbers on different websites lol. So he would been close to being the first $200 million rookie max extension.

Woj said $190 million, but other sites say $158 million :jbhmm:

Either way that explains the jump in pay in that certain amount of time frame as young players don't usually make an All-NBA Team their first few years.

I don’t have a dog in this fight but Luka was watching Nick Jr (or younger) when these were occurring :ld:
An entire decade of first round or worse is ALMOST as much of a black eye as the WCFs are impressive

it's never happened. Too much risk. But i bet someone will at some point because otherwise u really are stuck for seven years.
I think if it were, it’d happen in the next few years with Lakers doing everything to max the Bron-AD years, Blips having two top 10ish guys, Nets being stacked etc. Some super star might get drafted by a shyt team, not see title contention in the cards any time soon, and say fukk it

I would honestly say this current crop of dudes want to win quicker and believe they are the whole show quicker than any before them. And it makes sense, with that being their attitude on every level since city league. It’s a positive IMO, kills the attractiveness of being a treadmill squad or truly tanking
