Math is simply an expression of reason to organize and structure physical realities. Math is not a fact, that we can extract from the universe. It's a self-evident logic, it is reason immanent, and is one way of perceiving physical reality.

:snoop:

What brought this epiphany, and would you be as kind to provide an example of the bold?

I'm going to engage in a conversation and then I'll proceed you to teach you something about perception, philosophy of mind and mathematics.

Great thread and nice way of putting it. I've always had conversations with friends saying science and mathematics are just simply tools we humans have used to mold our understanding of the physical realm around us. Nobody knows exactly what an atom looks like...but the models we have developed thus far give us a pretty good understanding of how they work and let us manipulate them. Numbers aren't facts, just tools we use to be able to quantify the universe. Etc, etc. Calculus lets us model physical phenomena like waves and other functions.

One circle plus another circle of equal size could equal one circle of a larger circumference

i am not talking about circles so please do not bring up something else. To make such a bold statement you do realize you have be prepared to defend it against the most basic of math.

What you mean breh? My point to clarify a bit is...for instance...An alien civilization meets us with the same amount of technological know how as Earth. When we sit down and share knowledge, we might see that they know how to make a nuke as well...but their model of atomic structure varies drastically form ours. But according to their research and theories their model fits to harness the power of the atom...just as ours does. Same with their math knowledge. They have no idea what calculus is...but their system works to exploit nature.

Of course it isn't a fact, dumbass. Neither is language. Math, like language, is a form of symbolic logic -- a way of proving or disproving certain conditions, away or drawing verifiable conclusions from other verifiable propositions. Or, alternatively, drawing conclusions from preexisting mathematical truths that seem to make sense.

The fukk you think? That your comment makes math less valid as a medium of expression? There's nothing "immanent" about it. Math is not a question of faith or divinity. All logical conclusions have to be drawn from previous conclusions in a manner makes sense. The fact that numbers themselves are pictorial and could theoretically look like something else does not put math on the same plane as Jesus.

Why you so angry breh...just agree with him and keep it moving. You saying the same shyt. Where did he try and make make a less valid medium of expression?
