I gotta find the Omar Brutus smilie. Haven’t had to bring it out with the dead period ending. Should have some more soon.
We’re back.Always locked and loaded
--- Loved watching IMG 2023 WR Carnell Tate today at OSU's camp. He was there with his father and the family still lives in Chicago, so they are Midwest people, not Florida folks. Meaning I'm not seeing any game-playing here. Brian Hartline spent a TON of time with dad and Carnell. Dad also told me that he talks to Hartline OFTEN. For right now, I don't see the kid staying South for college and I think IMG is his pre-college training ground. Ask me for a comparison and even though I HATE comparisons, I'm going with Jaxson Smith-Njigba. Ask me if I'm ready to call Tate to Ohio State and I'm going to say NO, not today. Long, long way to go in this recruitment and I want to see it play out a little while longer. Want to see how Georgia, Bama, and Clemson look to this kid when they come calling hard. And I believe they will be doing just that. As an aside with Tate, his IMG team will be playing twice in Ohio this season and I'm planning on seeing them both times. This kid would have a high rating from me as a prospect. Top-75/100 type for sure. FOUR-STAR.
--- You know I can't sugarcoat stuff to fit the narrative and this might not be popular, but I was not blown away by Josh Padilla and this was my first time seeing him. He is good. He's really good. Does he beat Clemson or Bama, which I believe is the goal? Not too sure about that. He is undersized from a height and length standpoint. What I saw today is probably a center, with guard possibly being a big stretch. Can he be the next Pat Elflein? That's who he has to be in order to see the field at OSU or Notre Dame, because he is not super-quick or super-athletic. He is technically sound, and I love that. He must be the toughest, baddest, nastiest, mistake-free, dude on the field to be a multi-year starter at OSU, in my opinion. His film shows that he might just be exactly that. THREE-STAR.
--- I'm 99% ready to call USC transfer Palaie Gaoteote to Ohio State and I think they're THIS close to pulling the trigger. I think the ball is in Ryan Day's court right now and I believe that Gaoteote absolutely wants to be at Ohio State. I also think he's willing to wait on Day/OSU to make the call on taking him. On the plus side, Gaoteote has big-time experience and what LB at OSU can say that right now? He was a GREAT (not good) prospect at one time as a high school recruit. He was VERY GOOD as a freshman at USC and then the injuries started. Can he be the old Gaoteote? Can a change of scenery reinvigorate him and his career? How much has the USC culture (or lack of) hindered him? Bottom line tonight is I "think" we are going to see Gaoteote playing for OSU this season.
--- Loved watching the 2023 LB/DE from Hawaii work out at OSU, Tausili Akana. In fact, he was probably my favorite kid at the camp today. 6-4, 225-pounds. Fluid. Great change of direction. Took to the coaching of Al Washington and Larry Johnson really well. A little birdie told me that both player and dad didn't make this trip to Ohio State to see the Jack Nicklaus Museum. This is an offer they really want and he might have it in hand as I'm writing this, but I don't know that. This IS the kid you line up and beat Clemson or Bama with. This is the kid Bama and Clemson win multiple titles with. He is only scratching the surface of who he is going to be in 3-4 years. HIGH FOUR-STAR, and maybe a FIVE one day.
--- I really hope OSU takes 3 defensive tackles in the 2022 class and Hero Kanu certainly threw his hat into the ring with his performance today. He absolutely put one on Padilla and it was a TKO. And Kanu is only 16-years old right now so there is a lot of room for growth, both physically and mentally. He has some Haskell Garrett to his game and we all know how good Garrett is. Kanu ABSOLUTELY has OSU at or near the top of his list and the respect and admiration for Larry Johnson is real. Would they take him today? I think I would. I would have Kanu and Christen Miller as guys I would want on my team. Both are better than the trio they took a few years ago in Darrion Henry, Ty Hamilton, and Jacolbe Cowan, in my opinion. The position is just too important to miss on and I think there are some suspect players in the room right now, so take 3 sure things and get where you need to be. Kanu would be a TAKER for me, without question. FOUR-STAR.
- 2022 DT Hero Kanu: Nevada gave the ==== and Bank doubled down on his feelings on that too. I am joining the party and saying while nothing is “done”, everything I am hearing looks good right now for the international star to become a Buckeye when it’s all said and done.
- 2022 DL Shemar Stewart: Going to be clear and saying I am in no way calling Stewart to Ohio State, but getting him on campus on his own dime was a huge step one. It shows that the Buckeyes are for sure “in consideration”. Like Bank, I have my reservations that he leaves the south but agree in that as long as he’s answering the phone you keep calling. If he shows up again for an official visit, my attention will be had.
- 2022 DB Sherrod Covil: Ohio State had him on campus and didn't have him workout even though he said he would have been more than willing to. Now they are trying to set up an official visit. Could be a PLAN B if they can't land both Branch and Nwankpa or maybe they like him enough to take him regardless, as I think he could defend the slot. Let's see if the official gets set up first before we say this is serious---I would have Clemson as the leader right now though.
- 2022 OL Ryan Baer: Worked out on Monday and left with no offer and no official visit scheduled. Carter Smith did the same thing a week earlier and had the visit offer extended. Smith is above Baer right now, clearly and I would say I don't see Ryan in the class unless they miss on a bunch of targets.
- 2023 QB Cam Edge: Right now, he is PLAN B for the Buckeyes. Think they liked the workout and feel he is capable of playing at OSU, but clearly, they offered other 2023 signal callers who worked out this week and not Edge. I’m not sure moving from DeMatha to his hometown program of Smyrna in Delaware is going to help his stock much. We’ll see what happens here as they will keep the seat warm and he is a guy they could circle back with.
- 2023 QB William “Pop” Watson: He camped for two days at Ohio State and clearly wanted an offer. He didn’t get one and I think if he were taller (listed at 6-foot but seeing him in person he may be a bit under that) he may have landed a scholarship. He’s a good athlete and can throw it well, but he would also be a PLAN B as I think the Buckeyes would want to see more of if he can be “the guy” at this level despite not having the most ideal measurables. For the record, he holds offers from Michigan, Oregon, Tennessee, Pitt, Boston College, Arizona, and UMass. The Massachusetts-native will keep in touch with Ryan Day and Corey Dennis moving forward.
- 2023 QB Dylan Lonergan: Offered and I think Ohio State will be in his top 10 that comes out in a few months, but this is a two-sport star who is maintaining baseball will be an important part of his decision. Coming from the south (Georgia) I have my concerns on that end when it comes to OSU---you saw how Tywone Malone worked out when baseball became a priority. I’m not necessarily sure even if this was a football-only decision that OSU would land the kid, but throw baseball in and I am not sure I see it at this current point in time.
- 2023 QB Tad Hudson: Worked out for the staff on Wednesday and while that went well, no offer yet. Would put him in the same bucket as Cam Edge in that OSU wants to see the game film and right now, he is PLAN B/Tier 2 when it comes to the 2023 QB search. If OSU offers, I think they would be a player in this one. Hudson also got the whole tour/visit experience and had glowing reviews. Same high school as Evan Pryor so there are some ties here.
- 2023 RB Richard Young: VERY early in this recruitment, but I think Ohio State is positioned really well. Would have them either as the leader or in the top group for sure and that is where you want to be. Tony Alford doing a great job on this one thus far.
- 2023 RB/ATH Treyaun Webb: I think Ohio State is definitely one of the top schools in consideration and this is another one where Alford is shining. Same high school as Marcus Crowley and Shaun Wade, so there are ties here. Buckeyes will be a top contender moving forward.
- 2023 WR Carnell Tate: I see Ohio State as the leader and I would put a pick in for him to OSU if I had that capability. That said, when the mic was off, he seemed pretty genuine that a decision wasn’t coming soon and he will still seriously consider a bunch of schools. Like OSU right now but think there is a ways to go.
- 2023 TE Theo Melin Ohrstrom: Too early to say anything right now as far as where this one goes, but Ohio State will absolutely be a top contender moving forward. This is an offer the kid wanted for a really long time and he hit it off with Kevin Wilson.
- 2023 TE Brennan Wooten: Good visit, solid workout, but right now Ohio State would need to see a lot more from the Indianapolis Cathedral talent. He doesn’t have any offers yet, so there is time to see how the junior film looks, but it was good that he got on campus and met with the staff in case this is someone they decide to move on.
- 2023 OL Lucas Simmons: The size and the way he moves at the size impressed them. Too raw to offer right now but they'll definitely be watching him moving forward.
- 2023 LB/DE Tausili Akana: Came from Hawaii to land an offer and mission accomplished. Hit it off with Al Washington who shared plans to use him as a defensive weapon on the edge. Worked out with both Washington and Larry Johnson. I think the Buckeyes will have a great shot here.
- 2024 DB Omillio Agard: Loved this kid when I saw him live and before I knew who he was I thought he was a 2022 prospect he looked so polished. Visit went strong to Ohio State and I think it’s a matter of when not if he gets offered. Spent a lot of time with Ryan Day, Kerry Coombs, and Matt Barnes. He’s planning on getting back for the Oregon game and if he doesn’t have an offer in hand by then I expect one would come that weekend. I expect OSU to be a top contender for this former teammate of Marvin Harrison Jr. and Kyle McCord. FWIW he spent time with both of those guys, as well as Emeka Egbuka while on campus. Told me he “loves Ohio State” and can “definitely see myself there”.
Thoughts from the weekend
Another long list of visitors at Ohio State over the weekend. But a bit of a different vibe compared to what we saw last weekend and perhaps to what we're looking at ahead the rest of the month. What I mean by that is many of this weekend's visitors were situations where I think we all had more questions than answers coming into the weekend.
Are guys like Gavin Sawchuk, Joe Brunner, and Jihaad Campbell *really* in play?
Are guys like Ernest Cooper, Carson Hinzman, Wilfredo Aybar and Jaylen Early Plan B guys?
There were not a lot of guys on the list this weekend who seemed to fit the profile of being at the top of the wish list *and* Ohio State being in a major position of strength. So in that regard, this was probably one of the more interesting an unique visitor weekends as there seemed to be a mixture of guys who are leaning elsewhere and guys where maybe Ohio State is leaning elsewhere at their position.
That being said, coming out of the weekend, here is where I have things..
- On Gavin Sawchuk: I fully expect the Top 100 prospect to end up at Oklahoma. You can read his update with Alex Gleitman on the front page. One thing that does give me at least a little pause is that even when things seem to be quiet between Sawchuk and the Buckeyes, there is always some type of positive information that comes out, from setting up the visit to the comments he gave Alex coming out of that visit so he never really vanishes from the radar, he just kind of flies under it. But all of the intel I trust here is that Oklahoma is going to win this one.
I think that right now the back most likely to be in this class is absolutely Dallan Hayden and that if there is going to be a surprise detour with running back recruiting, that it would probably be North Carolina standout Omarian Hampton who I know a lot of people inside the Woody really, really like.
I do not think there will be room for a second back, but I concur with Bill Greene that there are certainly people, perhaps a certain running backs coach, that would love to sneak a second one
into the class. So while I don't think it is particularly likely, it does continue to bear watching to see if they can make that work.
- I've got four-star offensive lineman Joe Brunner in a similar spot as Sawchuk in that the Buckeyes have done well to stay in the mix here but that it just doesn't look like it's going to go their way. I think Wisconsin is the spot with Notre Dame second and Ohio State third. Nothing really to change my stance on that at this point but Brunner is notoriously quiet so we'll keep digging on that one.
- Four-star Denton (TX) Ryan cornerback Austin Jordan was perhaps the most interesting visitor this weekend from where I stand. With a top three of Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Texas, Jordan is legitimately in play for the Buckeyes and with a need to continue recruiting corners/defensive backs, there could certainly be room here. I've also had a couple of Texas sources tell me throughout this recruitment that if the Buckeyes push they could be a thorn in the side of the two Big 12 powers here.
I'm told the visit went pretty well this weekend but there has been a good bit of optimism lately on the Oklahoma side of things. Oklahoma has geography in their favor and probably the numbers as well as the Buckeyes are looking at bringing in a pretty staggering number of defensive backs in the 2021 and 2022 classes combined. So I'd stick with Oklahoma right now for Jordan, but I do think that is one to watch here in the coming weeks as these visits are digested.
- Going to mostly defer to Alex on four-star defensive end Wilfredo Aybar and OSU's chances, but I think he's going to need some "help" in the form of some other guys going elsewhere to really work his way into realistically being part of this class.
- The sudden decision to visit Ohio State for Jihaad Campbell was interesting. I know the Buckeyes love the four-star edge rusher and would take him, but I just have a hard time believing this thing flipped on its head basically over night. I wouldn't expect him in the class at this point but the decision to pick things back up with the Buckeyes after it really looked like this was a situation that was fading bears watching.
- No offer yet to Landon Samson, three-star receiver in 2022 and teammate of Quinn Ewers. As I mentioned above, I do believe the Buckeyes will push this receivers class to four and I also believe they'll let the Kojo Antwi visit play out before making a big push for anyone else. I think this search will get fairly broad if Antwi goes elsewhere but certainly Samson will be on the short list of names to know.
- Four-star Arlington (Texas) Martin defensive end Ernest 'RJ' Cooper IV has a really interesting mix with his top five of Ohio State, Notre Dame, Stanford, Oregon, and Texas A&M. I continue to hear that the academics component is going to be really big here and would be inclined to stick with my pick of Stanford for now with Cooper.
I spoke with Cooper coming out of his visit this weekend and I know he really likes and respects Larry Johnson and the "culture" that Johnson has in his room as well as the culture that Ryan Day is promoting in the locker room.
I think Ohio State is still waiting to see how things shake out with some other targets, however. Kenyatta Jackson's visit at the end of the month will be telling. The Buckeyes are, in my opinion, in the driver's seat for Omari Abor and will probably want to see that one through as well before going too far down the list of targets. Enai White is probably a longer shot at this point but is scheduled to make his visit at the end of the month as well.
Now with that said, if Cooper is leaning more toward Stanford, that could actually help the Buckeyes as Stanford generally fills up later due to getting kids cleared academically. If he's willing to wait, he may find a seat at the table eventually. But for now, I think Stanford and Notre Dame might be the best bets.
- I think four-star defensive tackle Curtis Neal is probably in a similar boat as Kenneth Grant in that the home run of a visit this past week with Hero Kanu wasn't ideal. Neal is definitely "in the mix" but I could see him ending up at Wisconsin, just not sure the green light is there at this point and I think this is a kid that doesn't want to wait.
- I would concur with Alex's sentiments that I think the Buckeyes have a pretty solid shot at four-star Duncanville (Texas) offensive lineman Jaylen Early. But Early is probably an interior guy and right now the priority is tackle. Would he have the green light? I think the answer to that was no heading into the weekend and not sure anything has changed there just yet. I would think they at least let the next two weeks play out. They have some major OL targets coming in and specifically they have a major interior OL target coming in very soon that we'll touch on below.
Will probably gather more thoughts as I talk to some more prospects and people in the know, but wanted to get some quick-hitting thoughts up based on what I have right now for those who were on campus this weekend:
June 11:
5* QB Quinn Ewers (unofficial): Nothing to worry about as things stand. Never say never but would be shocked if he signed elsewhere.
3* WR Landon Samson (unofficial): Worked out for Hartline on Saturday but no offer yet. I do think OSU likes the kid but wants to see how some things shake out for the potential fourth wide receiver spot. They host Kojo Antwi this week. Is CJ Williams still considering OSU? How do they feel about Samson vs. other WRs they have and will workout through June? Some time to make a call here, but I do think this kid is now in the consideration set at a minimum. Has Ewers' endorsement as his teammate and good buddy.
4* OL Jaylen Early (official): I think he is Ohio State's to lose but I need to find out if they want him. Not sure he has the green light right now but have to dig into that. If he does, I have OSU as the favorite.
4* OL Joe Brunner (official): Not seeing this one happening even though I heard it went "well"/
4* RB Gavin Sawchuk (official): I would take the field over Ohio State, but I do think people have understimated Alford/OSU here. No decision has been made, bank that, so there is still a shot. OU and ND officials coming up isn't a great sign for the Buckeyes though.
4* OL Carson Hinzman (official): Got the offer this weekend but not sure I'm seeing it. Will dig in more but tough to pull a kid from Wisconsin. Similar to Brunner.
4* DE Wilfredo Aybar (official): TBD--still trying to get info on this one. Not sure he’s a Plan A though.
4* DE Ernest Cooper IV (official): Heard this visit went well & I think OSU gave him something to think about. Still would bet on it being either Stanford or TAMU
4* DE/LB Jihaad Campbell (official): TBD digging in here. Clemson has been a school since way back when I first started talking to him that he always had on the list and it's the only one that has survived. Jihaad is at IMG but NEVER count out TAMU DL coach Elijah Robinson with South Jersey kids, and there will be an official to College Station coming soon. Maybe I am wrong and OSU changed his mind this weekend but my gut says take the field for sure.
4* DT Curtis Neal (official): TBD-Always thought Ohio State could get him if they made a push but with how the DT board is shaping up with Curry, Kanu, Miller, and a few others in the mix (and set to visit this month), I am not sure they are ready to make that push. Wisconsin could get a nice player here.
4* DB Ephesians Prysock (official): Think Ohio State set the bar after talking to him. Let's see how the other visits go and how Ohio State feels about the other DB prospects still on the board the next few weeks.
4* DB Austin Jordan (official): TBD-still figuring this one out and want to see if they view him as a corner or safety. Think he liked what he heard a lot but I'm not sure if OSU is going to push and I'm not sure that if they do it will be too late. Oklahoma is the team to beat right now IMO but will circle back in A-Deck if I can grab an update with some people in the know when it comes to both Jordan and Prysock.
2023 ATH Rodney Gallagher: Think Ohio State is going to be positioned really well if they want the kid (no offer yet). Two-sport star and visiting OSU for hoops in a couple of weeks. I do think he may go football in college (higher ceiling IMO) and he is being looked at as an athlete (DB/WR), although I think he can be a really good athletic safety. Buckeyes should have a great shot if he chooses football.
June 12:
2023 DB Joenel Aguero: Would have Ohio State in the "top group" after the visit and that is where you need to be right now. Have about a year until anything happens here.
June 13:
2023 TE Ty Lockwood: I would have Ohio State as the leader right now for the top 100 prospect. Story coming soon, but I think Clemson would be the threat if they come in with an offer for the Nashville-area star.
Let's look at where I think things are at today for the 2022 Ohio State recruiting class. This is a snapshot. This is not a total class prediction. There are official visits upcoming, unofficial visits upcoming, and things can change in a minute. Let's figure on a class of 25 and go from there. Here's how I see it today. A week from today this list could be totally outdated.
QB- Quinn Ewers (committed).
RB- Dallan Hayden (prediction in ink).
TE- Benji Gosnell (committed) and Bennett Christian (committed).
WR- Caleb Burton (committed), Kaleb Brown (committed), and Kyion Grayes (committed). Going with Kojo Antwi {guess, but there is an official visit coming and it's Hartline}.
O-LINE- Tegra Tshabola (committed), Aamil Wagner (prediction in pencil), Addison Nichols (prediction in permanent marker), and Carter Smith (prediction in pencil on being the last guy standing). Going with Earnest Greene {pure guess}.
D-LINE- Gabe Powers (committed), Omari Abor (prediction in pencil), Christen Miller (prediction in ink), Hero Kanu (prediction in permanent marker), and Caden Curry (prediction in ink).
LB- CJ Hicks (committed).
CB- Jaheim Singletary (committed), Jyaire Brown (committed), Ryan Turner (committed).
SAFETY- Xavier Nwankpa (prediction in ink) and Zion Branch (prediction in ink).
NICKEL- Kye Stokes (committed).
WHAT’S GOING ON WITH WILFREDO?
Nevada gave you the “long story short” earlier today, but it’s looking really good for Cheshire Academy (CT) 2022 defensive lineman Wilfredo Aybar to end up at Ohio State.
In talking to a few people close to the situation here is what I have on the 6-foot-4, 240-pound defensive end:
OTHER SCOOP, BUZZ, AND THOUGHTS FROM THE OFFICIAL WEEKEND
- Aybar was at Ohio State for his official visit and that trip went “great”
- While Ohio State was a fan of Aybar as a 2022 prospect, he became even more attractive to them as a potential 2021 signee. Aybar is at a prep school and can reclassify to 2021 from 2022. I am told that not only is he able to do that, but his plan IS to do that.
- Reclassifying wasn’t always the plan but when the opportunity presented itself, Aybar decided if it was the right situation it’s something, he was interested in. After building the relationship with Matt Barnes, Larry Johnson, and Ryan Day, as well as having a great visit, it was a “no-brainer” to him to pursue the reclass with the Buckeyes.
- I am told that Aybar to Ohio State will happen and very soon. The two sides are just getting everything in order and I would be surprised if an announcement doesn’t happen within the week.
- Aybar gives Ohio State a lot of flexibility and versatility. Can add muscle and play a strong side end type spot. Right now, he’s able to rush off the edge and drop back into coverage at his size. He’s moved around to defensive tackle and even some linebacker for his high school team so he can do it all.
- One source very familiar with Aybar as a talent told me just because he is reclassing doesn’t mean he will need more time to develop and get up to speed. They think that he will probably take year one to learn under the veteran group OSU has at end, but thinks he can be an impactful player and contributor as early as year two.
- THIS DOES NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH JT TUIMOLOAU. Ohio State felt they were very thin at defensive end with or without JTT and this was a great situation to be able to add another capable body to the room and do it with the 2021 class---not saying there definitely wouldn’t have been room for Aybar in 2022, but it wouldn’t have been as sure of a thing. The combination of those two things makes this an easy decision for Ohio State, separate of any possibility of landing Tuimoloau.
I filed this report immediately after the weekend, but wanted to update a bit on a number of those 2022 visitors mentioned:
- WR Landon Samson: Where this sits is ongoing evaluation. The Buckeyes are measuring up Samson and some other guys who have worked out so far (Antonio Gates Jr., Joe Griffin, etc.) up against a few more receivers who they will bring in the rest of the way. They also have Kojo Antwi in for an official visit this weekend and getting a read on that situation, as well as CJ Williams, will determine if Samson or someone else gets an offer for the fourth receiver spot.
- OL Jaylen Early: Think OSU is figuring out the interior o-line targets very similar to how they are figuring out wide receiver. I do think Early is a guy they can get if they push for him, but there’s several interior guys they are looking at, along with Tegra Tshabola who is already committed, that they will have to decide how they stack up against each other once the month of June is done. I spoke to a source at a different school that has been in this recruitment and their thoughts were that OSU would pass on Early, so take that for what it’s worth.
- RB Gavin Sawchuk: I am giving Ohio State a better chance than most other people. The relationship with Alford is legitimate. He had a great visit. He’s quietly been more interested in the Buckeyes for two years than people know. That said, I would project him elsewhere---with visits to Oklahoma and Notre Dame on tap, I can see either of those being a fit. Right now I would say Sooners, but I do think some people in the WHAC think there is a better shot than the general public do. I also do think OSU would take both Sawchuk and Dallan Hayden if both wanted in, but we’re not at that bridge yet.
- OL Carson Hinzman: Ohio State hit it out of the park. No doubt they did the best they possibly could with the kid and his family. They wowed them. Completely put themselves seriously in the game when the kid and his family came into the visit thinking it was just a free trip to see a big-time school. That said, this kid grew up on Wisconsin football. Pulling linemen from that state is not easy. That coupled with OSU having to figure out where he stacks up with the other interior guys has me calling Hinzman to Wisconsin.
- DE Ernest “RJ” Cooper IV: Some inside the WHAC feel they made themselves a serious player, but in speaking with someone down in Texas, they see him going to Stanford with academics being very important. It was good for OSU to get him on campus, but I don’t think they had much of a chance.
- DE/LB Jihaad Campbell: I thought there would be no shot here, but the sell of playing as a stand-up linebacker who can rush off the edge resonated well with Campbell. I am told he gelled with Al Washington and that the opportunity to learn some hand-in-the-ground stuff from Larry Johnson is appealing as well. Not calling Campbell to Ohio State, but I am ready to call OSU a serious contender here. Definitely some cautious optimism inside the Woody.
- DT Curtis Neal: Unless things shift with OSU’s thought process I see him committing to Wisconsin at the end of the month. Not sure they are willing to take him with who else is still on the board.
- DB Ephesians Prysock and DB Austin Jordan: I think this is like Early and Samson. With Prysock, Ohio State set the bar for sure and is out in front. With Jordan, I think Oklahoma has an edge, but I feel Ohio State could get him if they decide to push hard. How do these guys stack up to the other DBs on the board? Think that is still being sorted through.
