DAY ONE IN THE BOOKS

June 1 marked the first day of the live period, with Ohio State hosting a handful of prospects on campus for unofficial visits and workouts. Among those who showed up were 2022 linebacker commits CJ Hicks and Gabe Powers, 2022 ATH/DB Delian Bradley, 2022 OL Carter Smith, 2022 DL Christen Miller (stays through June 2), 2022 WR Jacob Bostick, 2023 OL Luke Montgomery, and 2023 DB Kayin Lee.

When it comes to Hicks and Powers, the visits went unsurprisingly well.

Hicks told me he went on a tour, spent time with the coaches and players, and just hung out around the facilities. He spent a lot of time with Powers, but also did some recruiting, spending time with Montgomery. Hicks said the two had a “great conversation” and there is definitely confidence from ‘Captain Buckeye” that he can help get one of Ohio’s top 2023 talents to stay home. Hicks will be back this weekend for his official visit.

As for Powers, he made the short trip to Columbus so that his parents could spend time on campus with the coaches, as they will not be with him on his official visit this coming weekend. Powers said his parents really enjoyed their time on campus, which consisted of a tour of the campus/facilities, as well as spending a lot of time with the coaching staff. This was Powers’ first time on campus in about two years and he also said being able to see the staff in person felt “real good”. One thing to note, Powers is absolutely being recruited as a linebacker at this time, despite some speculation he could eventually move down to defensive end—that was made clear to him by the staff on this trip.

As for Bradley, he worked out for the staff as a safety. While on campus he also spent time meeting with the coaches, specifically Matt Barnes and Kerry Coombs. I’m told that workout went well and when I asked Bradley about it he echoed “it went great!’. I think the Buckeyes will evaluate the film of the workout in the coming days/week, but I don’t expect them to move on an offer just yet. I think right now they want to see how things go with top targets like Xavier Nwankpa and Zion Branch, among a couple others, and then go from there. If things slip away with the talents previously mentioned, I absolutely could see Bradley being a prime offer candidate (and I think he would accept). This is a kid that has several Power 5 offers on the table and will be making other visit/camp stops in the coming weeks. A return trip to OSU is not out of the question, and I would watch for that when it comes to how this one is trending. CHECK OUT THE FULL STORY ON BRADLEY FROM MARC BY CLICKING HERE

The other 2022 non-committed Ohioan who came to visit the Buckeyes on Tuesday was offensive lineman Carter Smith. He toured the campus and facilities with his parents and worked out in front of Greg Studrawa. From everything I hear that workout went very well---so well in fact that Ohio State invited Smith back for an official visit. While Smith is publicly saying all the right things in that he isn’t sure yet if he’ll make his fifth official to Ohio State (current OVs are set to Tennessee, Indiana, Northwestern, and Virginia), I’d be shocked if he doesn’t take the Buckeyes up on the offer to return. The only way I see that happening is if things change on Ohio State’s end—which is certainly possible, but not likely. It will get interesting here though as OSU has not yet offered and may be slow playing this one a bit. They can’t slow play too much as Carter would like to make a July commitment somewhere, and I’m not sure this would be a situation where OSU can offer all the way until the LOI is about to be signed and still land him. Maybe they could but that strategy hasn’t worked in recent years with a few Ohio linemen, and I think the staff would like to be able to make that call ahead of a potential official visit, then try to lock things up on that trip. From what I heard via a source inside the WHAC, the Buckeyes “really liked the way he moved and were satisfied with his measurables, which were a bit of a concern”. Things are trending up when it comes to the chances Smith ends up in the class, but there are still some dominoes that need to fall before it happens.

Finally, when it comes to Montgomery, this was stop number one of the month at Ohio State, as the talented athlete from Findlay will be back on June 22 to work out for the Buckeyes. Montgomery has a busy month ahead, as he stops at the Young Life camp in North Carolina today, and then is at Michigan (6/10), Tennessee (6/11), Georgia (6/12), Auburn (6/13), Alabama (6/14), Clemson (6/15), Oklahoma (6/19), and Notre Dame (6/26) in addition to the 6/22 stop in Columbus. He’ll also be at Penn State on July 25. What I will say is that Montgomery is doing everything right. He just finished his sophomore year and hasn’t been able to take visits anywhere. He’s using this month to his advantage and getting out to get a good look at several top programs that want him and seeing where he may feel he is a fit. All that said, from everything I hear, right now Ohio State really has to mess this one up to not end up landing Luke. I think they are the clear team to beat and I am told that Tuesday’s visit to Columbus only firmed that up. Again, he will be seeing many other places for the first time and that could change things---but I’d be really surprised if this kid doesn’t end up in Scarlet and Gray. It may not happen this summer and could go into next off-season, but that is eventually how I see this thing going.

Competition is fierce on the team right now---but although spring ball recently ended, there is still a lot of movement going on....

1) Chris Olave is really really stepping up into a leadership role. Kind of a different situation for Chris--as he is more of a "lead by example" guy---but now, he is embracing the role as captain's captain for sure. Want to know who is the guy encouraging the running backs to take extra reps? That would be Chris.......Want to know who is getting the young wide receivers into the film room for more study? That would be Chris......Want to know who is contacting Kyle McCord and getting him out there for extra throwing? That would be Chris....
Olave is a great player---but he is making everyone else around him even better---and that puts him in rare air.....Love that kid

2) Miyan Williams is absolutely not who OSU thought he was when they recruited him. They thought he was pretty good. They thought he could help them situationally. They thought he might be a contributor later in his OSU career. They were wrong. Miyan is ELITE. Yes, I said ELITE. He has dropped about 20 lbs and is a cut up 220lb ball of muscle with ridiculous feet and great vision. I know we all expect Trey Henderson to be the guy---and he still might be at some point. But Miyan is going to shock some people this year with his ability-----and remember you heard it here first. Not just good---not just very good---but ELITE. Watch.

3) Jaxon Smith-Njigba is another guy that is WAYYYY better than people know. They've seen him make some nice catches. They've seen him contribute early. They've seen him get time in a crowded room. But this guy is a super star. Not just a "guy" in the room----he is ready to be THE GUY. In a room full of future NFL stars? He is as good as anyone on the team. Very under-rated player that will break open some games this season. Gotta guard Olave and Wilson---so someone is going to be isolated on JSN----good luck with that. Watch and remember I told you this

4) Tyleik Williams is going to be a very special player here. Ridiculous explosion in the ten yard dash and just uses his hands so well for a freshman. Everytime you watch this guy you know that you are watching something very very special. The other kids just rave about his strength and his motor which just never stops going. Going to be an immediate impact guy on the defense, as they will just HAVE to find room for him to get his reps. Hard to call a kid under-rated that had Alabama and Georgia offers---but he is MUCH better than I thought he could be at this point in his career.

5) Cade Stover is making the transition to tight end look pretty easy. Came in with every intention of playing on the defensive side of the ball--but is "all in" on the switch to tight end and starting to show things that would indicate he is going to be a really really good one. Super athletic kid that can get off the line and catch the ball when its thrown to him---but is a ferocious blocker and has really brought a nasty to the tight end spot that is rarely seen. Other kids have taken notice for sure----as sometimes when guys make position changes it is indicative of something lacking----but in this case? Its a glimpse at future stardom. He is the first guy out there catching passes in the early am---and the last one to leave---so heis putting in the work. Can't wait to see it on the field....

First, kudos to Alex who has been all over the recruitment of the Brothers Branch. I would echo Alex's sentiment that things seemed to really move in a great direction this weekend for both Zion (long-time 2022 safety target) and Zachariah (newly offered 2023 wide receiver target). Ohio State does not play the package deal game, they won't "play the game" by giving a meaningless offer to Zachariah so the fact that Hartline pulled the trigger was telling to me.

I also think these two are going to play together in college so it's a bit of a game-changer for me that Ohio State is now in on Zachariah. That, along with geography, were probably my two biggest reasons for Branch to end up elsewhere. Geography won't change, but having the attention of his brother could certainly change things up.
Branch still has a slew of visits to get through and I'm still quite leery of USC here and of how things look once this visit wears off, but this was a home run this weekend for the Buckeyes.

- Another home run this weekend? Five-star defensive end Omari Abor. From a source inside the program, the visit went as well as it could have and Abor had a blast. Optimism has been growing from OSU sources for a while now and it seems to be at an all-time high today.

That said, I checked in with someone I trust on the Texas kids and they told me that they feel OSU leads "by a good bit" and that Abor is enamored with the defensive end production at Ohio State under Larry Johnson. Visits are still set to continue here, so as I posted earlier there are still some land mines to navigate, but I think OSU has established itself firmly as the team to beat. Having one source who was on campus this weekend giving me almost identical intel to a trusted source back on the ground in Texas is obviously a good sign for the Buckeyes.

- The sense I'm getting on four-star cornerback Toriano Pride is that the visit went well but that it's going to be tough to beat Clemson.

- I should have more on Xavier Nwankpa tomorrow. I've mentioned recently that while I still think OSU is very much in the mix and perhaps the most likely choice, that it seems like the Buckeyes have "come back to the pack" a little bit over the past couple of months. I know the folks inside the WHAC feel the visit went well this weekend and are optimistic that some momentum has been regained.

- No major changes from my end on offensive tackle targets Aamil Wagner and Zach Rice. I think Ohio State is doing a great job with selling Wagner on academics and life after football as he's a bit of a different bird and definitely is more of a big picture guy than just a football guy. I like them to win the battle here over Notre Dame, but that upcoming visit is going to cause some anxiety, I think.

With Rice, again another great visit from all I've been told but I think people should be very leery of North Carolina here. Definitely still in the "Take the Field" group when it comes to Zach's recruitment.

- Staying on the offensive line, George Fitzpatrick could be a guy to start talking about a little more, especially if things go as expected with guys like Rice and Tyler Booker. I think Ohio State can definitely win this one, and they obviously like George enough to bring him in on this weekend. I think they'd have to take him if he tried to commit.
