Spirited week of practice --with very few missteps---here are some of the surprises in my opinion
1) Kyle McCord--really graded out well this week on the written tests--but was laser sharp when the pads went on and continued today with an excellent all around effort. Started out spring football just taking reps with the "twos"--is now getting the occasional bump and snapping with the "ones"---Just such a command of the QB position at a young age --big arm and surprisingly mobile with a GREAT pocket presence. Moving up the chart rapidly---and one to watch
2) Tommy Eichenberg--another guy that has killed in on the written tests--just has everything you want in a young linebacker. Knows instinctively where he needs to be so is always a step ahead on the defense and plays "faster" than he runs. Surprisingly good in coverage and has done everything OSU has asked on him this spring. Been a guy that OSU can leave on the field in every possible situation and that is a great luxury in a LB room that is looking for leadership and quality play. Made a big move this week for sure
3) Marcus Williamson---I am always on the look out for that guy who makes the "senior leap" and raises his game to previously unseen levels late in his OSU career. Marcus is my early leader in the club house for that honor. Has made multiple big plays in practice for the Buckeyes this week and seems to have gained an enhanced understanding of what they want him to do in this OSU offense. In terrific shape as he had a tremendous winter with Coach Mick and seems to have gained both strength and speed. Have been looking for some of the younger guys to help in the defensive backfield---but it may be this veteran who fills the void.
4) Marvin Harrison, Jr.---a lot of the incoming kids start to "plateau" at this time--as they came in on fire and the level of competition starts to catch up with them. With Harrison its been exactly the opposite as he is starting to separate a bit from the other WR's in a VERY crowded WR room. Harrison has all the requisite physical skills that you are looking for in a WR, but has demonstrated a mental acumen that is equally impressive. Hauled in a huge pass this week that had everyone at practice shaking their heads in amazement. SO much talent at these positions, but I'm not sure how you keep this young man off the field.
5) Josh Fryar---Stud takes a lot of grief, but this is one of his guys that he has been telling the other members of the staff about--and he is coming on strong. Totally reshaped his body to add both strength and speed over the winter--and its starting to show this spring. Extremely powerful with his hands and when he locks on to guy he has the ability to move them where he wants them to go. When you talk to the defensive linemen he is right up there at the top of "most difficult to play against" lists---and will provide key depth(or more) in a very crowded offensive line room. One to watch for sure.....
He should be, but the cacness that is scouting QBs in the NFL means that cac Wilson has to be propped up. Somehow playing like shyt against Coastal Carolina is ok and putting on an historic performance against Clemson in the playoffs with shattered ribs is nothing. It’s ok, San Fran is a better team for him anyway. Let the Jets have Cac.Yeah no duhhhh.... watch the tape. His arm strength, toughness and mobility is the best in this draft. Guy should be in talk to be #1 pick, which will rightfully happen after the pro day
Jets is the perfect situation for Fields winning ASAP. They can win the division with an impact rookie season from their QB. NFC West is a madhouseHe should be, but the cacness that is scouting QBs in the NFL means that cac Wilson has to be propped up. 1) If a game was today your starting MIKE linebacker would be Tommy Eichenberg. Tommy is just a stone cold assassin out there. Its getting to the point where receivers are all becoming gun shy before they head over the middle with Tommy roaming around. He gets this "dead eye" stare to him and just plays with so much rage on the field---its a little scary to be honest. A huge surprise for the defense and a guy that will play a lot.
2) The player the coaches talk about the most? Cody Simon. They just love this kid. Are playing him all over the field but he just has such fantastic football instincts that the staff is all raving about him. I won't even post the comparisons--as they are unfair---but he has everything you like in a LB----speed, aggression, athleticism and high football IQ. He will find the field for sure.
3) Craig Young is another guy that just flashes everytime he is on the field. They have him running around all over the place and he gives the OSU defense so much flexibility when he is out there. Using him in some non traditional roles for sure---but he is the protypical "new breed" of linebacker at the OSU.
4) If you see the big guy that they have running with the linebackers when they do sprints? That would be Jack Sawyer. Can't say enough good things about this kid. Can get after the QB's AND stop the run with equal aplomb---and that's rare for a freshman. Just so polished and athletic. You guys like to make the Bosa/Young comparisons with kids---with Sawyer its 100% appropriate. Big time player. Really big time.
5) Josh Proctor has been placed all over the field as well. They've even been walking him into the box more and more in special circumstances and creating some unique situations(more on this later)--but he is THE key to the OSU defense for 2021 and they will most certainly feature him more and more.
6) Lejond Cavazos came into OSU just cocky as hell. That didn't last long as Wilson and Olave have taken turns killing him on the field---and even the tight ends took some early shots at him--as he was making himself a target. Has humbled himself and quietly is having an outstanding spring.
Most exciting thing has been the emergence of the "UFO defense" at Ohio State(or as they call it "Best 11")-----they started the spring giving some exotic looks where they were bringing in non traditional packages and lining it up against the OSU offense. What they've found is that these hybrid looks can really create difficulties for the offensive line in identifying and picking up who is coming and who is laying back. So they've started playing this defense more and more and featuring guys like Tommy, Cody, Craig, Josh , Jack, Zach, Martinez, Ransom, Banks, Williamson, Burke. Hickman, Watts, etc etc where they just get the "Best 11" guys out there--and aren't as fixated on the traditional position grouping and responsibilities.
Its been allowing the defense to really confound the OSU offense for much of the spring---and allowing the OSU defensive players to play with more creativity and passion---as they aren't thinking as much out there---and are reacting more to what they are seeing in front of them.....
bottom line is an OSU defense that looks much improved, much more athletic and much more disruptive......
Babb out for the spring with a injury . Hope it isn’t seriousTommy is running with the ones at Mike right now, but also remember Dallas Gant is out this sprang with a foot injury or some shyt and he’s thought to be the starting Mike this fall........unless we get To’To
Yeah saw that. Him and Sevyn. Both our presumed starting CBs won’t be playing the rest of the sprang after we needed to get much better from last year.Babb out for the spring with a injury . Hope it isn’t serious
Big blow. Corners need these reps.Yeah saw that. Him and Sevyn. Both our presumed starting CBs won’t be playing the rest of the sprang after we needed to get much better from last year.
