How many of those people laid off were from the digital media department? That's something I would want to know. I still buy sports preview magazines because it brings me back to a better time, but magazines aisles at grocery stores have been bare for awhile.

Some of yall dancing on SI's grave failing to connect the dots and how bad this shyt is. Replacing workers with freelancers, not giving them benefits...

--------------

no reason why they should’ve let Bleacher Report even become a “thing” on their watch. SI has been in the game since day one and fumbled the bag by not adapting when they had more than enough time to get it together.

SI definitely made mistakes but it's difficult. It's the similar issue with retail. Hard to abandon one business model to follow something no one can define while being tied down by the thing that keeps the lights on.

It's the nature of business, a doubt any company has transitioned well between eras. Maybe the NYT.

I'm also not sure a lot of these digital sites can survive as standalone properties.

Haven't picked up an SI since 2001 when they said Oregon St was going win the national title

:comeon:

As the lone Oregon State fan on this board Oregon State being ranked #1 wasn't a stretch at the time.

11-1 the previous year and destroyed Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl 41-9. Our starting QB and RB were returning for their senior years. Obviously it didn't work out and they didn't have a good season, but it wasn't some crazy prediction at the time. SI and ESPN also loved the Oregon vs Oregon St narrative and Oregon was also a top 10 team the year before.

I remember Ken Simonton was getting heisman talk hype :heh:

First 3 seasons he had 4300 yards from scrimmage and 51 TDs. His JR year he had 1559 rushing yards and 19 TDs. Had he had the season most expected him to have he would have been in the conversation.

I don’t expect a deeper dive into a topic like this from this forum, but this is bigger than Sports Illustrated not adapting.

Shareholders above all principles is leading to a lot of businesses and industries failing. It’s leading to liquidators buying up valuable organizations and asset stripping.

The new plan for Sports Illustrated is to higher freelancers and contractors. What does that mean? No need to pay benefits, meaning higher profits for the shareholders. That’s whats happening here.

They should have seen the calm before the storm :manny:

Print media is dead...and everyone is an "expert" these days...they no longer have exclusive access like they did in the 80s and 90s.

if i'm not mistaken, ESPN was hanging on by a thread until First Take brought them back to life.

Aside from some of the old, longtime beat writers at the local papers, Woj and Shefty are literally the last of the Mohicans when it comes
to legit “sports journalism” ... Shefty is literally his own brand right now, singlehandedly carrying the torch . He needs to make a power play soon .
Think they all went to the athletic. They got great stuff over there

It was a stretch. But I respect your post.

that sucks
should have adopted the athletic model

only reason i cared about si was reading mmqb the peter king left to nbc
then id check out andy staples for college football and now hes at the athletic

Is the Athletic making money? They have a ton of VC money behind them so it could be a while before they recoup if they ever do.
