Some black Marvel fans on Tumblr are saying some interesting things.

Someone wrote:

this feels a lot like bendis is using poc people as stepping stones to further his career; he used miles morales for that, but now that he started writing him wrong, he’s bringing another poc face to the table & i’m worried he’s going to be using poc faces to further his “all lives matter, i don’t see color, i’m not racist” agenda that he started doing with miles

I'm not familiar with Bendis. Anyone feel like he messed up Miles' character or is trying to further a colorblind/raceless agenda by using people of color?
Bendis didn't do anything wrong with miles. Idiots are jst mad that he had Miles say he doesn't want to be known as the black spider-man but just spider-man

Riri is a shytty character tho so I won't be supporting this.

Bingo.

And can't speak on Riri because I haven't read it. but the bolded is strike true. It's also funny that the guy who created the character can "write him wrong"

Just so that I understand, are you asking if the overall popularity of a character matters in terms of boosting sales of a book? If so, I would answer with "usually....yes."

Batman's name alone sells books. Same with Superman, Spider-man, Wolverine and now even Cap, Iron Man, Thor and Hulk due to the MCU.

In Storm's case, its not as if she was a lesser-known or unknown character (to casuals and the mainstream) who finally got some shine on a major scale (like Black Panther did in Civil War). Storm has been well featured in many cartoon shows and video games, has been featured in over three blockbuster films by an oscar-winning actress, and has been well featured in comics for decades. After Wonder Woman, one could make the argument that Storm is the next most popular female character in comics. Off of name recognition alone, Storm's book should've sold better.

Not to mention that Storm's book was written by Greg Pak, the same guy who's writing the Cho-Hulk book right now. Cho-Hulk's book is doing waaaaaaaaay better than Storm's book did. The art in the Storm book wasn't excellent, but it was solid imho.

All this to say that there's no reason for a legacy-character of Nova, who may have a following, to come even close to Storm's numbers. There's also no reason for Storm's numbers to not be higher than they were. But as I mentioned before, most comic book fans, despite all their rhetoric, are creatures of habit. Thus, Storm's book suffered quickly when it came out.
I wouldn't put Storm in the same league as Batman, Wolverine, and the rest you named. Their popularity came when comics were still selling and a lot of us grew up on them during that time.
Storm rise in popularity amongst casuals came with the movies and even still I dont think that popularity is higher than they know her codename and her powers. I doubt many of them even knew Storm had a solo or were even interested getting it.

Also in todays comic book industry DC and Marvel dont give time for lesser selling comics to grow and build an audience unless it's a character they are really trying to push at which you'll see them market it more and put top talent on it.

Hulk is Asian

Iron Man is a black woman

Thor is a woman

Cap is a black guy

OG Avengers are gone:whoo:

I'm okay with this because some new blood is needed in comics, but at some point it gets ridiculous. Look at my new character! He's Latino, he's gay, he votes democrat, he's a feminist and he's a vegan too! Aren't we super progressive!:krs:

Seems like all that hair would be an issue wearing that helmet. Also shouldn't she be Iron Woman?

Remember when I was talking about original black character (outside of Black Panther) struggle to sell unless they go through the legacy route?

Here are the numbers for June 2016: Comic Book Sales Figures for June 2016

Nighthawk #2: 16,522

Power Man and Iron Fist #5 (Luke Cage as a co-lead): 24,202

16k for Nighthawk brehs. In the old Marvel system, that's cancellation numbers. And no matter the system, those numbers are pathetic, especially considering the quality of the material.

24k for Luke Cage and Iron Fist isn't "bad", but considering Luke is well-known in the comic book circles and has been around for nearly 40 years, not to mention he (and Iron Fist) are about to have a show on Netflix...those numbers should be higher.

Meanwhile...

Captain America Sam Wilson #10: 31,989

Spider-Man (Miles Morales) #5: 47,025

For FalCap to be selling over 30k at his 10th issue is very impressive. Miles, meanwhile, continues to sell units, despite Peter Parker being around and Peter having his own book.

So once again, for those against black characters going the legacy route, support the original characters with their own books. Because so far, Black Panther appears to be the exception, NOT the rule. These numbers alone are a reason why Marvel is going the way they are going.

And speaking of Black Panther:

Black Panther #3: 75,037

When it comes to black characters selling units, the King has the juice right now. Second best selling Marvel solo title that isn't Star Wars affiliated. Breh even outsold Cap #2 and even a Civil War II Spider-Man tie in.

Nighthawk is also technically a legacy character
