Didn't they put in a law to prevent this kinda stuff?

Pretty sure you can't just squat on a domain name any longer in hopes that you can sell it to the company that actually owns the name. :manny:

Cuban could put up a website about basketball nets. Fish nets. ETC they couldn't do shyt.

Anyone who knows me knows I'm a New Yorker who gets annoyed by New Yorkers thumping their chest with delusional city pride, but in this case I think some of you are underestimating Brooklyn's national popularity. Sure, a bunch of black people in other cities have their own regional pride and give two shyts about Brooklyn either because they genuinely don't or out of reactionary spite, but a lot of people - a lot of white people - are deeply invested in the myth of Brooklyn, now more than ever, as it has become a mecca for the dull, empty, lame-and disaffected-is-the-new-cool culture that has swept not only our country but others as well.

Those annoying football commercials with a fat bearded man in a goofy blazer? The camera commercials with goofy, plain white people outdoorsing it? The sitcoms with corny white people doing corny white people shyt and no real point? That's all originating from this new dominant culture, and Brooklyn is that culture's center. As someone born and raised in New York, I don't say that without great shame and disgust, believe me.

People from the midwest, south, and west are moving there at very significant rates, higher rates than ever. Bands are pretending they're from there for cred. Magazines and tech companies are setting up shop there. If you think just because you don't personally give a fukk about Brooklyn that a team called the San Jose Nets carries the same significance as a team called the Brooklyn Nets... nah.

doesn't matter. The Brooklyn in the Nets name is the biggest hook, not simply the Nets.

:dwillhuh:

You don't think people would be typing in 'nets.com' expecting for the Brooklyn or New Jersey ot Atlantic City or Rhode Island or Wherever Nets to come up?

This is all true. But my question is will that cool/urban/geek to chic bullshyt that sells bands, t-shirts, sell phone apps etc...can it sell a basketball team?

And when that aesthetic goes out of style where does that leave the Brooklyn Nets?

They just need that to get them an early bump, get the momentum going, then the key will be to win some games and maintain fan interest. They've executed an impressive, cunning plan so far: trot Jay-Z out to blind the low-income black folk into passively accepting the eventually deleterious effects of establishing the arena in Brooklyn, thus rendering protesting city council members impotent in the face of a massive real estate overhaul; land free agents with star-power both to build a winning product and also to create a buzz; attract people to games for more reasons than just basketball (Jay-Z will help with this, but so will the revamping of that area, especially given the sorts of people moving into and living in Brooklyn already). MSG sold out for years and years when the Knicks were competitive and when they were doodoo. The games became an event unto themselves, and that's what will happen in Brooklyn eventually. This ownership seems really savvy is a part-Mr. Burns, part-Machiavelli way.

Trust me, I gives a fukk about Brooklyn or this team, I'm just calling it as I've observed. Could be wrong, who knows.

It looks like they are marketing towards the young urban crowd with this team but all it takes is a few thuggish incidents at games to ruin that whole plan.

True. Especially the bolded. And I'm probably hating a little bit cuz of all the sh!t you mentioned in your first post. :yeshrug:

But I still think there might be a big difference between coolness and actual fandom. In sports history and tradition is probably the biggest draw, then wins, then stars. Everything else seems frivolous...

Ruin the plan?

Taht's what the brutal ass NYPD is for.

Nothing is going to get in the way of that plan.

This right here is exactly why I think the Brooklyn Nets might be wasting a ton of money and tiem marketing the team the way they are. They're leaning heavily on the "Super Cool Brooklyn" angle...but thats not how marketing sports teams works usually.

If people love Brooklyn but don't give a shyt about the Nets then they are wasting their money to sell the city and not the team.

Well, people love NY but a lot of people that live here don't fukk with the Knicks, so it's not unusual...

You're preaching to the converted. I have no desire to step foot in New York City anymore except to see family and eat at certain restaurants. There's nothing more cynical and disgusting than these new residents leaning on the City's edgy past for credibility when it suits them, despite the fact they're a major reason why the people who turned the city into a vibrant, culturally and artistically interesting, edgy place no longer live there.

I should also make clear my extreme (though I believe accurate) belief that hipster culture is an extension of the white supremacist ethos cloaked in what seems to be an innocuous, liberal, nerdy aesthetic.

I know a little bit about it, ladyfriend of mine from when I was in school moved out to Williamsburgh and then Flatbush so I've been up there a few times over the last 3 years. I remember visiting when it was all rastas and Erykah Badu'd out in the early 2000s.

Plus DC really has the exact same immigrants taking over, but less creative and with better degrees...

:ohhh: True story tho, theres an underlying smugness to the whole thing that says "I'm white, so I don't need to try hard at anything. Everything I do is smart and interesting." :pacspit:

I think the Domain names are owned by the NBA, no? I could be wrong but i think the league handles all this. Not the Team

All of the official team sites are on the NBA server. Each teams site is nba.com/nickname (Nets, Wizards, Heat, etc.). I think it's up to the franchise to make sure that the nicknames are directed to the official team site. Some of the teams (such as the Bulls, Celtics, and Heat) go to the official NBA site if you type in their nicknames (THE OFFICIAL SITE OF THE CHICAGO BULLS | THE OFFICIAL SITE OF THE CHICAGO BULLS for example) while others (such as the Wizards, Nets, Thunder) don't.
