The reason for the King of Mali's wealth is that the Mali kings had a good understanding of the concept of seigniorage
This meant that the crown required all gold mined to be turned over to the Treasury but instead of minting gold coins, you were given a bag of gold dust which was the currency of the kingdom. The difference in weight went to the King. If the King was wise, he would give you a hefty bag of gold dust since giving you less would just debase it and cause inflation.
