MoS also has to make the point that Superman has to kill Zod. If he overpowers/outfights him to the point that he has time to go around and save people, then he doesn't need to kill him.

Making Superman a novice, having him throw Zod thru 5 to 10 buildings at a time, but then caring so much about one couple that it is setting up a situation where he has to kill is all poor story choice. I would have preferred something else.
