I'm glad that after so many years we finally gonna get a modern version of Superman rather than a continuation of Donner's Silver Age Superman movies, but as epic and bad-ass as it looks, I still have reservations.

David Goyer has never shown any real understanding of or respect for what makes Superman such an iconic hero (he wrote one of the absolute worst Superman stories ever in Action Comics #900 ), and it shows in the trailers with the dodgy Pa Kent portrayal (Pa Kent telling Clark to let people die is like Uncle Ben telling Peter that with great power, he can do whatever he sees fit) and being jokey about the S on the chest. I wouldn't be surprised is there's some really corny joke mocking the glasses and haircut disguise in the movie as well.

I have high hopes Snyder and Nolan kept his weak ass in check though, especially because I have a lot of faith in Snyder's over-the-top extravagance juxtaposing Nolan's down-to-earth realism and balancing out their styles.

Pa Kent tellin young Clark to let them die as real as it gets.

Thats his son...the last thing he wants is people knowing he a fukkin alien...if Clark is doing things that regular people cant do especially as a kid...what kind of pressure you think thats gonna bring to the homefront?

What you dont understand is this movie is giving a grounded view of Clark as an alien on a foreign planet...not superman the boyscout from day 1

I hope they do the entire Krypton back story all together. Hard to believe a civilization that advanced and have technology to travel to other galaxies would just stay and die. People who wrote comics back then had very little imagination of advanced technology.

I get that but I'm too big of a Superman fan to let that shyt pass. Superman doesn't have to be grounded, he's Superman. And at the least Pa Kent could be supporting of Clark trying to do the right thing. I won't judge until I see the movie but the trailers really make it look like Pa Kent is against Clark using his powers, which just feels wrong to me since Pa Kent is the original Uncle Ben (literally), the most supporting father figure to any superhero.

I don't mind them rewriting some of Krypton's backstory because as you say, some of that stuff is iffy, but Superman as he is shouldn't be changed IMO.

He does have to be grounded...thats why WB went to Nolan in the first place ...thats why the last one flopped and even Bryan Singer said it himself he was out of touch with what people really wanted to see...

Its not rocket science...imagine if your kid was picking up middle school buses..if clark truly wants to "fit in" and be human...that would never happen...thats the struggle he has to deal with...and Pa Kent knows this because he knows the potential backlash that comes with it

I wouldn't get too carried away with a random trailer line most likely taken out of context.

Like the IM3 trailer where the suit looked like it was threatening Tony, and people speculated that it was A) a suit gone bad or B) Tony having a nightmare

Nah, the last one flopped because Singer didn't realize that nearly 30 years had passed since Donner's Superman and both the audience and the character had moved forward. Also, the movie in general was just boring as hell.

And once again, why ground a character like Superman like that? People really want Superman to be told to not fly around and do awesome shyt, have him look at the sky at night and wonder if he could be more instead of doing awesome shyt? That's why both the Hulk movies flopped, because they were all about Banner not wanting to be the Hulk and the audience just wanting to see the Hulk.

I'll say straight away that's obviously not gonna be a problem here because Snyder's coming through on the action tip, but still, outside of traditionally grounded heroes like Spider-Man I don't want to see my heroes struggle over petty shyt when they should be doing awesome shyt.

Like I said, I won't judge until I see the movie, but there's also the line of Supes saying that his dad didn't think the world was ready for him.

I figure a lot this stuff sounds like nitpicking but I just care deeply about the character, more so than any other superhero.

How you say "nah"..then provide my point...:laff:

you ground a character to give him some type of depth....there was nothing visceral about any prior superman movie...this movie will do that

I didn't provide your point because the character moving forward didn't mean they grounded him. Maybe the audiences' desires for the character had, but still, I don't see why we need an angsty Superman searching for his place in the world when the core principle about the character is that he inspires hope, and makes us aspire to be like him. Some of the greatest Superman stories of the past two decades like All-Star Superman (which are arguably also the greatest Superman stories of all time) are about that and about Superman fighting against the growing cynicism of the modern world (representing the modern audiences who think of him as a 'corny boyscout').

And ironically, the much hyped story that was supposed to ground Superman and make him more relatable (which was literally called Grounded) was absolutely horrible because it shat on every principle that made Superman great.

The music will prevent this from being a 10/10 (John Williams' shadow looms too large)

But a 9/10 is good enough for me.
