Seems to me that the plan is he can opt in and stay...but if he opts out he's gone.
Interesting.. opting in also puts some slight risk on Melo

hes coming off one of his best years and is now 30 - NOW is the time for him to be signing his next contract

what if he has a serious injury?

id imagine that will factor into his decision somewhat

The Knicks arent giving him a new contract after the season they just had, especially when he's due a lot of money next year anyways.
