Phil seems ready to play hardball with Melo - Knicks Blog - ESPN New York
My reasoning is all in here

you're sitting there acting like the only way the Knicks can win in the next few years is if Melo is on the team. Meanwhile teams like Indiana proved you can do it without having to indebt yourself to a single player. I've said since Melo announced that he wants to opt out....if he's gonna come back he needs to take a paycut.
Otherwise
what does STAT have to do with anything?
Melo said he would take less if it would help the team win. And if we're being honest, him taking less gives the Knicks a better opportunity to put good pieces around him. If Melo's telling the truth, it's not a big deal and skirts the popular opinion that he's about money over winning while giving the Knicks a flexibility they're going to need after next season. If he's lying then he's probably gonna leave us anyway while asking us to sign & trade him to a better team.
Edit: Here...this pretty much sums it up
He's taking a cue from respectable organizations on how to win...you guys are trying to promote being the Knicks. It dont go hand in hand brehs
Bruh...Cats really wanting Melo to walk
Players trashed Woodson in exit interviews: Jackson
In nothing short of a dig at former coach Mike Woodson, Knicks president Phil Jackson revealed several players during exit interviews told him the club didn’t play as a team this season and relied solely on its talent.
The Knicks finished 37-45, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2009-10. During his 24-minute press conference Wednesday, Jackson didn’t mention Woodson’s name once.
“One of the messages from the players was that it was a very talented team,’’ Jackson said. “They had to have a lot of games where they forced their talent on opposing teams rather than playing with freedom to make things easy. All the wins were hard to get. They were winning with talent and not with team play, which I thought was an accurate statement.
“I think the talent’s there,’’ Jax added. “How to blend it together is a coaching decision and a personnel decision.’’

:sasword:
I don't think he needs to take less. Amare and Andrea contracts are going to be gold this off-season
For example you can trade Andrea and world peace for josh smith and amare for joe johnson
