He didn't shoot between 2 people, he shot her in the back to defuse the situation. That's a world of difference from aiming for body parts.

Also for those of you saying he should've tazed her, they won't. That knife is already at the young woman's body. Tasers don't always immediately stun people. Also gotta take into account the distance he is from her and if the pin would even catch through her clothing.
