Some of us here are making up excuses for the film because we like Octavia Spencer. The movie was 5.5/10 territory and that's only because Spencer carried the movie on her back.
-Someone in here used the "they're kids" trope as an excuse to make sense of the kids stupidity. I thought that was being far to kind.
The first night there she pulls a gun out on them. Another night she slams the two girls against the wall for going upstairs. The girls acknowledge that MA stole their jewelry. And then they sneak in her house to find out MA has a child that she locks upstairs, and on top of that in Ma's room she has photos of literally everyone matching with their parents?
"Yeah we know that girl in the wheel chair is locked upstairs. But Hey, let's party!"
I would rather be told to have some suspension of disbelief for the craziness of the film rather than to be told that they're kids or it's horror logic.
-The characters themselves felt as generic, simple, and archetypal as you could get (besides MA). It was basically this: new girl, the guy new girl likes, the girl that is implied to be the whore, comedy relief character (dudes jokes were trash), and a black character. There wasn't enough character development for me as an audience member to feel connected to anyone. For example, the black kid didnt do anything in the movie besides ask for pizza rolls. Like honestly none of us would have cared if those kids died. The only one we most likely feel for is MA's own daughter.
-Speaking of MA's daughter, I don't know if it was made clear, but why was she allowed to be at school that one day? I know for movie purposes it was a hint for what was to come later on in the film. But considering the girl was already in the wheel chair that would have implied that MA would have already been injecting her with stuff and would have her locked away like she does the rest of the movie. This point of mine is further proven when the the new girl recognizes who she is but the other girl has never seen her before and she's just shocked that MA has a daughter. You would think everyone at school would know the sick girl in the wheel chair.
-Juliette Lewis looks like Ted Cruz so I couldn't stand when she got screen time.
-Stu was basically there to get the mom MA's house. But I hated that nikka too.
I can't remember what else I was going to rant on. lol
I did like oh dude's dad even though they tried numerous times to cast him off as an a$$hole lol. I found it weird how he was getting a blow job from oh girl in the most random location ever like they aren't a couple that could do that at one of their houses lol.
Octavia Spencer made the movie enjoyable for what it was worth. I don't follow her acting career that close but I was shocked to see her play a role like this because it seemed so left field from what I know her from. Congrats on her for proving how talented she truly is.
