'tetsou & youth' track by track Review
summer - nice melodic intro. kids playin & shvt. a real sweet melody. Im intrigued.
Mural - Popular sample. Love how the producer kept the musicality in it tho. Arguably the best Ive heard it flipped.
"I like cartoons & and southern cities with large moons" #chills..the bars on this joint is just...."life is not a dcitionary its a thesaurus"
blur my hands - another lush beat. soulful hook. Poignant Bars from wasalu. Got damn. Positive Message about self worth. Such a dope song.
dots & lines - that banjo threw me off but it sets the tone for the bluegrass/southern blues vibe of the track. lu droppin knowledge about Sacred Geometry & the beauty of human existence. the hook is clean. flows couldve been better but still a good song. The last verse is raw tho.
Fall - a cool interlude to segue into the second act of the album. It hints towards a more jazzier vibe.
Prisoner 1&2 - This track kinda blends the the country vibe of "dots&lines" with the jazz vibe of "fall". The beat is smooth and agressive. Alot of tension in this joint. Flows are sharp as hell tho. Lyrics go deep. Alot of symbolism. Lupe even adds some agressice adlibs to get the point across. The hook is clean and melodic. part 1 transitions into part 2 with repetitive the sound of cell doors slaming followed by lu's sister spittin some spoken word about the industrial prison complex. Part 2 has more of a trap style beat. 808s & and whistling synths galore. The subject matter is the sane but Lupe is more direct with the message on part 2. good song. Just feel like the transition between 1&2 was a bit weak.
Body of Work - Starts off with a dope hook. That leads into an ethereal trap/ cloud rap type instrumental equip with thumpin kicks, drones, and one of the rawest bass lines that youve heard in a minute. The Chick on the hook sounds a bit like Chrisseter Michelle. Wow. The mix on this joint is so next level. The bars are so dense. Got Damn. Might be my favorite track so far. I havent figured out the concept of this one yet. off 1st listen it sounds like the story of a broken man comin to grips with his insecurities and finally sayin fvck it. & the sax solo at the end just puts the icing on the cake.
Little Death - The beat on this joint will catch u immediately. So soulful. Smooth bass line plays under a slappin snare. Lu immediately comes spittin with the first line that speaks on eatin disorder. He continued to hit h with metaphor after metaphor until the beautiful Nikki Jean comes in to croon sweetly on the hook. Lupe speaks on the overlooked ills of the world on this joint. Wow. such a dope joint.
No scratches - ambient guitars, reverbed kicks, & soulful percusion shape the soundscape for this track. The hook is solid as nikki jean returns to play the backround for lupe as he speaks on laziness, materialism, self hate, & the danger of not livin in your purpose, & taking action in your life. Good song.
Winter - broken violins & howling wind chills. alot of tension in this interlude
Chopper - Trap beat. An okay Quasi political hook from Lupe. Talkin bout food stamps, Obama Care, & gun laws. Things pick up when the first verse starts. These nvkkas was spittin all over this jawn. The hook is the only thing that holds this song back from great status. The beat is crack. the track is feature heavy and everybody was spittin. Suprisingly, Lupe was the achilles heel on this track. I coulda did without this joint.
Deliver - I remember this track when it leaked. I thought it was weak then & I still do, although I can appreciate it more in the context of the album.
Maddona - Obvious kanye influence on this joint. That whole Dark Fantasy vibe. nikki Jean returns on the hook. This track touches on religion & struggles of black life. Lupe saves the track from being cliche with dope choppy auto tuned flows & appropriate pop culture metaphors. great song. Love the outro/bridge on this joint.
Adoration of the Magi - the beat is acid jazzy. Thumping bass. Smooth backround vocals. A smooth sax. reverbed snaps. a twinkling rhodes, and distant miliatary dnares. everything is drowned in reverb. the instrumental feels like a dream. the hook talks about pain, immaturity, & being caught up in the ills of thr world. The bars on this joint is just ridiculous. great song.
T.R.O.N. - Another dreamy instrumetal. Hard hittin kicks & snares. A melodic vocal sample washes over everything. It sounds like Sounwave did this joint. Lupe is spittin that crack. sheesh. "Medusa turned coke into stone"...sit on that 1 for a second...AbSoul comes through and spits a solid verse as he usually does. so much energy on this track. a great track.
spring - and cool outrolude that wraps the album up in instrumental fashion. birds chirpin. broken viloins, kids playing
Final thoughts - After being dissapointed by Lupe time & Time again for the past 8 years I went into this album with low expectations but also with hope for the best. Lupe really shocked me on here. The album is nothin short of outstanding. Every beat is raw every word seems to have been meticoulously scrutinized & well thought out. The only gripes I have is the transition of Prisoner 1 into Prisoner 2(shouldve been two seperate songs), Chopper with its weak hook & Abundance of guest raps, & Deliver with its weak conept and lack of appeal. The interludes are kind of pointless when u have music this good. Its like why wait? just jump into it u know. But overall this album is incredible. The best album that Ive heard since GKMC. Im really proud of Lu for living up to his potentential. testou is original, lush, & thought provoking. This is the Lupe Fiasco album that youve been waiting for.
