Just went through my second full listen, Goddamn this album is so multilayered
You can literally FEEL this is the album that he's been trying to drop since The Cool. What some call lyrical diarrhea I call an MC weaving intricate details, gems, knowledge, pure skill into a tapestry of wordplay and poetry. THIS is the shyt that makes me fall in love with Hip Hop all over again. That makes me log into the Coli and read through a 50 page thread. That makes me rewind verses over and Over again with the
face. I LOVE this shyt man...
I've said it countless times in the past and I'll say it again. Lupe Fiasco is the closest rapper to Nas in terms of pure lyrical talent and putting together concepts. The fact that he's even have the audacity to put out an album like this, with an EIGHT MINUTE HOOKLESS INTRO on some straight RAP shyt is fukking beautiful. The production matches him almost perfectly.
Now the question is, do I think this is better than The Cool? After the first two listens No. The Cool is a true classic and The Cool is an album that is dense yet simplistic in approach. What I mean by that is Lupe managed to hit ALL angles with The Cool while still staying true to the album's concept as well as himself. T&Y is an "I don't give a fukk album" which is a statement of artistic expression. You can tell Lupe truly didn't care about pleasing anyone but himself and the core fans who enjoy deciphering lyrics and theorizing on all the potential meanings. It's a moody type of album that, after the initial euphoria of new music wears off Im sure many of us will have to be in a certain mindset to appreciate.
