There's just different types of rappers.

I think crooked I is one of the best purest spitters ever from a technical point. He has so many verses that are among the best I've ever heard. But he's not great at making albums.

Kendrick is amazing at crafting cohesive albums. There's really nobody else like him currently. And there's not many in hip hop history.

2pac was probably the most versatile artist of all time. He could reach you on a deeply personal level and make you cry on 1 song, get the party started on another and release a song like hit em up. His emotional intelligence came through in his music.

Biggie had maybe the most effortless and melodic flow ever.

Everybody has their strengths and weaknesses and nobody is perfect.

And for different people lyricism means different things.

Props on the Crooked mention and great breakdown:salute:

Guys like Crooked,Blackthought,Jadakiss,Sigel are whay come to mind when i think of top tier nasty lyricist. Lupe waste his time trying to do cute shyt and it comes out less nasty then it could have often times. So yes he has wordplay but his use of it is highly innefective:martin:

Theres a certain level of aggression and attacking of the beat ,and your peers i think of when i think of the top tier guys. Neither Lupe or Kendrick fit my ideal but can i deny their top tier technical lyricism?

And just look at the quotables people are posting from lyricist, they are hardly all that lyrical. Yet i saw someone take a jab at the Migos as garbage. But Migos have wordplay and quotables as lyrical as the ones you guys are posting from the guys you consider top tier lyricist and rappers. So maybe your putting too much stock in quotables,or just dont know great rappers when you hear one in general based on an overall picture.

nikkas even throwing shots at prime Wayne:martin:

K is a great rapper, he just doesn't give you a lot of word play but he is an amazing writer and storyteller

Not everyone can be jay z with the wordplay and punchlines

Naaaah, F&L + Cool better than GKMC. GKMC flows well but let’s be honest nobody plays that album anymore
Lmao, I like Lupe but nobody is replaying F&L or T&Y. F&L sounds fukking dated, like some of Lupe's production choices fukk up the whole listening experience.T&Y, came out the same year as TPAB and just like TPAB, it's an album you have to be in the mood to listen to. Nobody is going to be bumping that shyt, usually it's because they want to be on their introspection shyt.

Not everyone can be goat rapper either

That's why battles are important. It's not about what you don't do in music not meant to show off the skill set. can u do it period. I'm yet to be wowed so I don't think he's a better rapper than people in his Ilk. Every body else I can quote. I've been a fan damn near a decade. Something gotta stand out

Are y’all nikkas serious on here:hhh:

Y'all on the 'Gram holdin' money to your ear
There's a disconnect, we don't call that money over here

You gave him 20 million without blinkin'
He gave you 20 minutes on stage, fukk was he thinkin'?

All this old talk left me confused
You'd rather be old rich me or new you? And old nikkas, y'all stop actin' brand new
Like 2Pac ain't have a nose ring too

You almost went Eric Benét
Let the baddest girl in the world get away
I don't even know what else to say
nikka, never go Eric Benét!

That’s just some quick shyt I remember from his last album alone ... the majority of the noteworthy bars from 444 were all punchlines:stopitslime:
Jay so effortless with the bars that these nikkas don't even realize they're punchlines

:wow:

We dont even know if he writes them, and its more to being a lyricist than “quotes” now thats a fact
Uh no

Quotes don't have to be punchline n metaphors man

I'm done screaming out jump off rules lost my girl
Broke all of my jump off rules
Kept fuccin the side chick so a nikka lied more
Picked her up in the woman's car that I ride for
Creeping I would hide more, got confused as to who I'm pose to fight for
Can't even blame the jump it was my fault
Cuz I gave her the gun and she killed the only bytch I would die for - budden

Give me one of those from Kendrick

His name's Dwayne so why the fuc my son keep calling him daddy?

Hoopty done shytted, spent more money tryna fix it then u did when trying to get it

I can go on and on from budden, Lupe, Royce, pusha,

Wit he laccs wit and yes lyeicism comes down to how u say something.

For instance from my notebook

I could say hoes fucc me everyday

Or I could say

"thots throw me the p*ssy I don't make demands, draws at the snap of a finger, captain underpants"

Which is harder to write? Which is more impressive

And don't steal my shyt nikkas

I don't view lyricism in the same light that many do. When I consider a lyricist, I view them as elite songwriters and not based on specific bars. Dope punchlines and quotables are nice, but I don't think a rapper is an elite lyricist unless they are penning entire verses of :ooh::whew::ahh::mindblown::mjcry::wow: worthy lyrics. For example, to me, the artists below are elite lyricists, IMO:

Nas
Pac
Jay
Biggie
Face
Ghost
Eminem ('99-'03)
Rakim
Outkast
Lauryn Hill
Lupe

^^^ It's the imagery, the wordplay, the storytelling, and the emotion in the words alone that make them elite. Their words come alive even when read. I don't really get that from Kendrick Lamar, but he's a great rapper, just not a compelling lyricist, which I think is missing from this generation of rappers. It's smoke and mirrors with a lot of them and Kendrick is an example of that. It's surface level writing that lacks the point where creativity, depth, and imagination meet execution. Kendrick gets over on the overall narrative. He's great at coming up with storylines that drive the album, but the individual songs lack that depth and ambition. Not saying Kendrick makes wack music because he doesn't. He makes great albums, but it's not the lyricism that makes them great.
