Putting to rest any lingering doubts, Netflix and Marvel have confirmed plans for a second season of
“Luke Cage.”
In somewhat-typical fashion, the announcement was made this afternoon with a brief video on Twitter showing the exterior of Pop’s Barber Shop. As the camera closes in on the window, a neon sign lights up, reading, “Season 2 Coming Soon.” The accompanying text states simply, “Always Forward.”
The news, more formally announced at Comic Con Brazil, probably shouldn’t come as a surprise, considering that
“Luke Cage” emerged as Marvel’s biggest Netflix hit of 2016. More than that, it reportedly enjoyed a stronger debut than the streaming service’s recent sensations r “Making A Murderer” and “Stranger Things.”
The third series in Marvel’s Netflix deal, following
“Daredevil” and
“Jessica Jones,” “Luke Cage” stars Mike Colter as a former convict who’s given super-strength and unbreakable skin through a sabotaged experiment. A fugitive, he tries to rebuild his life in Harlem, where he must confront his past and fight for the future of the neighborhood.
As the video indicates, there’s no announced premiere date for Season Two. The Marvel/Netflix 2017 calendar is filled with “Iron Fist,” which debuts in February, as well as “The Defenders” miniseries, now in production. They’re
expected to be followed in 2018 by the debut of “The Punisher,” the second season of “Jessica Jones” and the third season of “Daredevil.”
Executive produced by Cheo Hodari Coker, the first season of “Luke Cage” also starred Mahershala Ali, Simone Missick, Theo Rossi, Erik LaRay Harvey, Rosario Dawson and Alfre Woodard. All 13 episodes are available for streaming on Netflix.
