Something else is going on behind the scenes. Mavs didn't even give other teams a chance to offer their best. They just gave the Lakers a young superstar who just made the finals.
How do you trade Luka and barely get any picks back? You gave away your franchise for Anthony Davis who's turning 32 this year with his injury history? Something funny is going on with this trade.
When America went to bed, the 3 biggest NBA storylines of the year were:
- Declining ratings
- The NFL stealing Christmas
- European "expansion" by way of a league to run in opposition to the Euroleague, which even if successful would cost owners money for 30 years
oh, and bonus stories
- Should 3 point shots be eliminated
- Should games be 40 instead of 48 minutes
- Everyone hates the All Star game, cancel it
And an emergent story being monitored
- Maverick Carter fronting money with the Saudis to form a competing league
It's not that these plotlines arent good looks for the league--they all individually and collectively undermine Silver's leadership.
"Sir, we have investors in Saudia Arabia that would finance several European teams, but the roadblocks right now appear to be concerns around year over year viewership increases for the playoffs and the Finals. We're being told if we can get the Finals numbers back to 2015-levels, the Prince and his partners would be interested in finalizing the terms of this deal."
Lebron vs his hometown Cavs in the Finals, or LA v Bos in the FInals will do numbers in June.
Wouldn't be surprised if the entire NBA social media department was full tilt with "NFL IS RIGGED SWIFTIES TO THA SUPERB OWL" this week to put the spotlight on that league being fixed, while behind the scenes Silver was creating the most marketable Finals matchup since Bron v Steph.
Look for a big name player (Butler? Gianis?) going to Cle or Bos next to really set the stage.
