He's underrated in America as an athlete still. This guy deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Michael Jordan for his on field performances. He really is that impressive.
There's something about him that is amazing. You don't even need to understand soccer deeply to see that. Like Jordan, he has this extraterrestial/beyond human quality to him in that he's able to do things that defy logic and that other players just can't do.
For those who are knowledgable about soccer, he's clearly the best ever player at this point and like Jordan not only is he the best player to ever play, he's also arguably the most exciting player to ever play. Sports is about entertainment at the end of the day and that's hard to do.
He's not as formidable as an athlete as MJ was though. MJ was a 10/10 in every major category. Messi is a 10/10 in like 90% of major categories but he's an average defender and his mentality and leadership is also questionable. And there's the off the court success stuff which obviously he can't compete with Jordan in (not that any other athlete can). But as a singular talent, Messi is unbelievable.
I consider him the 2nd best athlete of all time because he is the best ever player at the most popular sport and also arguably the most entertaining to watch.
Real Madrid definitely said, wait it out and you will get a mil a week.
That's "only" 31 million a year, but when you actually break it down.

Yep. He actually "sucks" in international play.Hasn’t he choked when he plays for Argentina tho?
$52M a year? Why do they say "per week" and not year?
It's been tradition ever since.
Fifty-five years to the day: £20 maximum wage cap abolished by Football League clubs
Italy use yearly. Sometimes they give the gross sometimes they give the net amount
So is PSG gonna receive a lot of money from Real Madrid in a transfer fee?
Lol Futbol is THE global sport. Whether it translates in America is as you can see is inconsequential.I’m not some non globalist or America first but you cannot convince me any world that an athlete is worth $160M a year in a sport that doesn’t translate in America
Not only is this super ignorant sounding, Messi is still probably one of the biggest/most recognizable athletes in America as well.I’m not some non globalist or America first but you cannot convince me any world that an athlete is worth $160M a year in a sport that doesn’t translate in America
Why are some of you so proud to revel in your ignorance?Wouldn't know who he was if he was in full uniform sitting in the waiting room next to me.
Chris Rock: Shaq is rich. The white man who signs his check is wealthy.
I think about that when I see these huge contract numbers.
