If you could pick one sport to be an elite athlete in........soccer might be the best bet.

The money at the top is insane....just that you're recognizable EVERYWHERE.

Tom Brady might have the best setup. 7 rings, super model wife with more money and he can be incognito in 95% of the world.

Messi would only go under the radar if he visited the US.....and he would get mobbed in Texas, California etc.

Lol have you seen Ronaldo trying to get a cup of coffee

Hasn’t he choked when he plays for Argentina tho?
He didn't choke . Objectively speaking, he's the best player to ever put on the Argentinian jersey. He has scored the most goals, made the most assists, has the most appearances for Argentina. Maradona won the World Cup in 1986 but that 1986 team was a much more complete team overall than any Argentian team Messi ever played on.

He took them to the World Cup finals in 2014, a competition where he won the Golden ball in (i.e the best player of the entire competition). If that is "choking", I don't know what is.

They lost to Germany in a very tight match. If Higuain had scored a simple chance in that game, 1 against 1 with the keeper, this silly narrative would have changed.

He's easily the best player to ever kick a football.

For the Messi and Ronaldo comparisons.

This is how they stack up. These numbers are probably from about 3 month ago so any slight differences are negligable.

For those who aren't knowledgable about soccer, these are Mt Rushmore numbers, made the more impressive that these 2 are doing it at the highest level in the modern era. No player has put up such numbers maybe in the last 50-60 years.

But peep the games played. Messi is both a better goalscorer and better assist man than Ronaldo. He literally does almost everything better than Ronaldo other than jump high and head the ball, but Messi is 5'7.

The comparison between these 2 is almost as poor as the MJ vs Lebron thing. Though not as nonsensical as that as the gap between MJ and Lebron as players is definitely bigger than the gap between Messi and Ronaldo. But nevertheless, Messi is comfortably better than Ronaldo is.

These are just the numbers, as a pure soccer player, without considering numbers, Messi's all round play is vastly superior to Ronaldo's.

That's when you talk about stuff like (key passes, dribbling, chances created, throughballs), he has the whole package. Messi has more assists than any player ever and is the best dribbler in the history of the game.

Not just Messi, there are many footballers throughout history and even several today whose all round ability is greater than Ronaldo's.

But Ronaldo is compared to Messi only because Ronaldo is a goalmachine, that's it.

there's Hispanics when I was coming up that related more to the countries their favorite soccer star was on than their own

Just curious , who is the highest paid black player right now? Mbappe? Lukaku?
Futbol salaries seem bimodal, Mess & CR then every one else
IDK shyt about Bol, but Lukaku was looking fukking frigid out there after the PK today :snoop: but nikkas was putting him in the same air as some of the best I did recognize, so I figured it was just some bad luck for him

He's underrated in America as an athlete still. This guy deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Michael Jordan for his on field performances. He really is that impressive.

There's something about him that is amazing. You don't even need to understand soccer deeply to see that. Like Jordan, he has this extraterrestial/beyond human quality to him in that he's able to do things that defy logic and that other players just can't do.

For those who are knowledgable about soccer, he's clearly the best ever player at this point and like Jordan not only is he the best player to ever play, he's also arguably the most exciting player to ever play. Sports is about entertainment at the end of the day and that's hard to do.

He's not as formidable as an athlete as MJ was though. MJ was a 10/10 in every major category. Messi is a 10/10 in like 90% of major categories but he's an average defender and his mentality and leadership is also questionable. And there's the off the court success stuff which obviously he can't compete with Jordan in (not that any other athlete can). But as a singular talent, Messi is unbelievable.

I consider him the 2nd best athlete of all time because he is the best ever player at the most popular sport and also arguably the most entertaining to watch.

Messi > Jordan and it's really not even close imo

Messi being the "GOAT" is :laff: :laff:

He does deserve that money though, he's walking ATM for Barca and has been for at least 15 years for them.

He did, got the best player award.

Messi getting that award is laughed at by anyone that knows anything about futbol. Most people just assume he got it because of Adidas :russ: but whatever it was, it was evident he had that award in the bag no matter what happened in the Final, were he didn't do shyt like he does 80% of the time he plays for Argentina.
