I thought about that too, but I don't remember Pi saying anything about him eating the cook when he was talking to the investigators. Also, wouldn't Richard Parker theoretically be by his side while he was on the island if it indeed represented cannibalism, considering Richard Parker supposedly represented Pi's "internal, animalistic dark side"?? It seemed as if Richard Parker was kinda doing his own thing on the island, even went to the boat by himself at night time.

Also curious as to what the flying fishes represented, if anyone has an idea.

The boat he rode on was a metaphor for

So it's obvious, no he didn't have any animals with him on the boat. The hyena was under the tent in the boat, and the tiger was under the tent in the boat. Both of them couldn't have been under there at the same time without the hyena dying.

So it is in fact, his overactive imagination that conjured that story of the zebra, the ape, the hyena and the tiger.

Saw it last night. Very slow beginning, picks up when he gets stranded at sea.

Movie was solid. :ehh: Not as great as some made it out to be (in my opinion), but I could understand why some of you feel that way.

I took the first story as the tiger representing Pi and Pi representing God.

The tiger kept pushing Pi away, rejecting him and showing out right animosity. Eventually, he learned to trust Pi and realize he needed Pi in such a desperate situation.

In the end, once Pi helped the tiger get through the tough times, the tiger turned his back on Pi and felt he didn't need Pi anymore since he was in essence saved and could handle things on his own at that point.

I think a lot of that is how people turn to God in a crisis, but turn their backs once they're in the clear.

I'm not a religious person and never read the book, so I could be way off base. :manny:

That's an interpretation I hadn't heard yet, but is incredibly interesting and makes plenty of sense.

:obama:

Definitely will be seeing this again, and 2nd watch will be VERY different than the first

very interesting take. IMO this is what makes the movie so good. they tried to be "philosophical/religious" with it, but still left it open ended and up to interpretation as it should be.

Just watched it. Took me long enough considering its one of my favorite books.

I think a lot of people are going to get caught up on which story is true or not, and by reading the story and the way they spent a lot of time developing Pi's religious ordeal ... I think that Yann Martel intended the reader to pick his own. And that would show the reader his views of religion kind of. Would you prefer to believe an off-the-wall story that requires belief beyond a normal realm of thinking ... or would you prefer to believe something that's easy to believe, that doesn't require you to look crazy for thinking its true?
