There's always a choice :manny:

and statist economic ideas ain't bad.. as long as the people implementing things are smart

The statist economic ideas implemented by the Nigerian government haven't worked since 1970. The attempt to re-try the same flawed ideas and programs is an insult to Nigerians and a waste of public funds. The Ajaokuta Steel Mill and the Peugot car factory are prime examples of failed ideas which are getting fresh looks.

The state should take a role in developing the conditions for economic development but for a very long time, the Nigerian government has proven itself incapable of running businesses and competing in the public sector without encouraging corruption and creating 'white elephants'.

Take a look at these articles and tell me what you think!:

We should discuss Northern Nigeria:

a) Huge youth bulge with a growing population. Politicians have little incentive to attract labour intensive work to the North because of oil patronage politics and federal redistribution of oil wealth.

b) Political elite is corrupt and isn't developmental.

c) Political elite uses religion to gain power. Creates environment for religious extremism and violence against non-Muslims

d) Desertification. Will also push millions of people in Niger into Nigeria, exacerbating the situation.

e) Northern Nigeria has experienced two 'peasant revolts' (Maitatsine and Boko Haram) since 1980. The next one isn't too far behind

Kaduna bans Nigeria's foremost Shiite group, IMN - Premium Times Nigeria
Context: In December 2015, hundreds of Shiites were massacred by the Nigerian Army after the group protested against state security forces. Victims' bodies were secretly buried in mass graves outside the city of Zaria. The leader of the Shiite sect which protested, Ibrahim Zakzaky, was kidnapped by the Nigerian Army and hasn't been seen since. In addition, the Governor of Kaduna State (Nasiru El-Rufai) is said to have presidential ambitions...

I am glad that actual Africans like @MansaMusa exist who do not chest beat while putting their heads in the sand and being in denial about the problems in Africa. Those are the type of Africans who may save the continent like Patrice Lumumba, Kwame Nkrumah and Nelson Mandela. While the rest on the underhand will leave the continent in the state that it is in due to chest beating while being in delusion about its problems.

The reason why I say this is because I was recently on Nairaland(use to frequent that forum now just go on there to steal pics for my appreciation threads and even thats coming to and end) and its crazy how many of the Nigerians chest beat so hard on there, trying to trash many other blacks and I mean MANY(African and non-African). I remember long time ago that one poster said that Nigerians are more "civilized" than other Africans. Even the posters that I am very cool with and seem level headed are like this. This seems to stem from the posters falsely seeing Nigeria as "the giant of Africa." Yes Nigeria has the largest economy in Africa but thats just bragging rights really which does not do anything. Yes Nigeria has the the richest man in Africa. Again bragging rights that does not do anything. Yes Lagos is the third biggest mega city. Again bragging right that does not do anything. Yes Nigerians are the most educated group in the UK and USA, again bragging rights that does not do anything. I can go on but you get my point.

It seems most of the things that posters on that site big Nigeria up are just chest beating bragging rights that are meant to make them feel good. While ignoring the serious problems like the very underdeveloped north with Boko Haram. Corruption. Piracy in the delta. Half the population illiterate. 95 million Nigerians live without electricity. Poverty. Etc.

But the ironic thing even with the bragging many of the posters engage in tribalism against one another. But imo I think it would be BEST for Nigeria to stay united and at least try to work out ethnic problems. Because imo a break up of Nigerian regions would spell BAD things for everyone living in the country. The only region that would survive and maybe progress would be Yorubaland which seems to be more developed with Lagos and oil. To me it would be like a more successful Ghana. But the North... Yeah they're fukked. And after researching up on the Biafan war its a no wonder why they so badly wanted to stop the succession and even WHY they wanted to stay under colonial rule!

If the North were to break up from Nigeria they would just be another typical Upper West African Muslim country like Mali, Niger, Chad and Burkina Faso. Which is NOT good. The only difference would be that Northern Nigeria would be an English official speaking country. They would be fukked due to being obviously landlocked, possibly instability with radicals, no rich resources like oil, underdevelopment, poverty along with many other things.

Like @MansaMusa violence is not the key but the south should make it CLEAR to the dominate North that they depend on them and not the other way around while also trying to develop the north.

mind explaining? :patrice:
Maybe @MansaMusa can explain better but from what I got was that Yoruba and Igbo people were on the forefront for an independent Nigeria. During colonization I believe the North was dominate. Anyways while the Yoruba and Igbo leaders wanted Nigerian independence they wanted the regions to be organized regions with said regions with the ethnic groups inhabiting them controlling them. The North obviously did not like this since most of the valuable resources like oil was in the south and it would be harder to dominate and take the resources. So they preferred if they stayed under British rule since they would still have control.

EKITI STATE PREPARES FOR WAR AGAINST THE FULANI!
Ekiti people must be prepared to defend their land against these Philistines whose attributes and characters are extremism, violence, bloodshed and destruction. Read more: https://www.naij.com/1022793-tension-fayose-alleges-link-between-buhari-and-fulani-herdsmen-declares-battle-video.html

Fayose urges Ekiti people to prepare for war against herdsmen

Ekiti state government recently signed a law restricting the movement and activities of herdsmen in its communities – However, the herdsmen have been accused of flouting the provisions of the law with impunity as well as threatening the state – Fiery Governor Ayodele Fayose says the silence of the federal government to the threat by the herdsmen speaks volume Ekiti state governor, Ayodele Fayose, has exposed what he thinks is the alleged link between the federal government currently headed by President Muhammadu Buhari and the herdsmen who have continued with attacking communities without restraint. Fayose is not happy with the recent threat by the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), the umbrella body for herdsmen in Nigeria who openly threatened to wage war against the government and people of Ekiti state.

Ekiti state currently has a law that restricts the activities of the herdsmen and Fayose recently arrested some of them for flouting the law. He however claims MACBAN has lied that four cattle belonging to its members were killed by the newly inaugurated Ekiti Grazing Enforcement Marshal (EGEM). “Four days after this threat was issued against the government and people of Ekiti state by the Miyetti Allah, the federal government is yet to act in any manner that will disabuse the minds of Ekiti people, who believed that the federal government is in support of the threat. “The silence of the federal government has no doubt further confirmed the insinuation that there is plot to give tacit support to the herdsmen to invade some border towns and villages in Ekiti state and cause chaos in the State so as to justify the evil agenda of declaration of a state of emergency on the state.

“Nigerians should be reminded that in May, this year, Myetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria said openly that the reason for the killing of over 1,000 people in Benue state was the killing of over 800 cattle by Tiv youths. In other words, Miyetti Allah boldly told Nigerians that its members (herdsmen) killed over 1,000 Agatu people of Benue state because their cows were killed!” Fayose noted. According to him, up till today, no one has been arrested for the massacre in Agatu in Benue state and now, “Ekiti state and its people are being threatened by this same Myetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, and the federal government has pretended as if nothing was wrong. “From the words and antecedents of the Miyatti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, it is clear that they have assurance beyond their personal minds from the federal government to kill Nigerians in place of their cows. If not, by now, the man who signed that press statement, threatening the entire people of Ekiti State ought to have been arrested and questioned. READ ALSO: Protests as 200 herdsmen storm Enugu “Therefore, in view of the above, we wish to tell Nigerians and the entire world that in the event of any invasion of Ekiti state by killer herdsmen, the federal government should be held responsible. “The herdsmen and those urging them on should also be informed that any attack on one Ekiti person is an attack on all Ekitis and we shall not sit back and allow our people to be killed under the guise of cattle rearing.” The governor said in the event of federal government’s security agencies refusing to secure the lives and properties of Ekiti people, the people will have no option than to defend themselves.

Fayose, in the speech made available to NAIJ.com, also told the people of the state to be battle-ready since the government has refused to say anything or come to the rescue of the residents. Hear him: “I am therefore using this opportunity to put Ekiti people, especially residents of border towns in the state on red alert. Ekiti people must be prepared to defend their land against these Philistines whose attributes and characters are extremism, violence, bloodshed and destruction. “For the avoidance of doubt, the Prohibition of Cattle and other Ruminants Grazing in Ekiti State Bill, 2016 that was signed into law on August 29, 2016 remains in force. READ ALSO: Fulani herdsmen: Governor’s aide held hostage by women “Nigeria is a federation and each state is empowered by law to make laws to protects its people. “Therefore, the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria should rather tell its members to comply with this law by seeking from the government designated land for grazing ranch, which the government is always willing to give. “Five cattle that were arrested last week are being kept in the government ranch and their owners can take them back as soon as the necessary fines are paid. “It is strange that the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria kept silent when its members killed two people and injured several others in Oke Ako in Ekiti state. So strange that the same Miyetti Allah that defended the murder of over 1,000 Agatu people of Benue state and kept silent when herdsmen killed over 100 people killed in Enugu state and a traditional ruler was killed in Delta State suddenly found its voice when Ekiti state government decided to curb the murderous activities of its men. “Why didn’t Miyetti Allah that is now calling on President Mohammadu Buhari to warn me, the custodian of the mandate of Ekiti people warn its members when they were killing Nigerians and destroying farmlands? “Are their cows more important than human lives?

“To us in Ekiti, the lives of 5,000 cows cannot be equated with those of human beings that are being killed daily by herdsmen across the country. “Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria should know that cattle farmers are not different from other farmers. If they want to rear cows in Ekiti, they should do so in accordance with the laws of the State. After all, law prohibiting sale and consumption of alcohol was made in Kano state and the law is being enforced while Sharia Law made in some States in the north is also being enforced.”

Nigeria finds more oil - in the Niger Delta!
ExxonMobil Discovers One Billion Barrels of Oil in Nigeria
Barely a week after it sold its downstream subsidiary in Nigeria, United States’ oil giant, ExxonMobil Corporation, has announced the discovery of up to one billion barrels of oil reserves in the Owowo field, offshore Nigeria.

The development is a boost to Nigeria’s efforts to increase her crude oil reserves from the current 36 billion barrels to 40 billion barrels target, which was set for 2010 but could not be achieved as a result of lack of investment in exploratory activities.
The Owowo field spans portions of the contract areas of Oil Prospecting License (OPL) 223 and Oil Mining License (OML) 139

In a statement posted yesterday on its website, the Texas-based oil and gas company said the huge discovery has a potential recoverable resource of between 500 million and one billion barrels of oil.

The world’s largest publicly traded international oil and gas company stated that the Owowo-3 well, which was spud on September 23, 2016, encountered about 460 feet (140 metres) of oil-bearing sandstone reservoir.
According to the statement, the Owowo-3 extends the resource discovered by the Owowo-2 well, which encountered about 515 feet (157 meters) of oil-bearing sandstone reservoir.

Commenting on the discovery, the President of ExxonMobil Exploration Company, Stephen Greenlee, said: “We are encouraged by the results and will work with our partners and the government on future development plans.”
The company further added that the Owowo-3 was safely drilled to 10,410 feet (3,173 metres) in 1,890 feet (576 metres) of water.

The well was drilled by ExxonMobil affiliate Esso Exploration and Production Nigeria (Deepwater Ventures) Limited and proved additional resource in deeper reservoirs.

ExxonMobil holds 27 per cent interest and is the operator for OPL 223 and OML 139.
Joint venture partners include Chevron Nigeria Deepwater G Limited (27 per cent interest), Total E&P Nigeria Limited (18 per cent interest), Nexen Petroleum Deepwater Nigeria Limited (18 per cent interest), and the Nigeria Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) Limited, a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) (10 per cent interest).

ExxonMobil had recently announced the sale of its 60 per cent stake in Mobil Oil Nigeria Plc to NIPCO Plc, thus exiting from the Nigeria’s downstream oil and gas sub-sector.
Before the sale of its downstream subsidiary, the company had three affiliates operating in Nigeria: Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited (MPN); Esso Exploration and Production Nigeria Ltd. (EEPNL); and Mobil Oil Nigeria (MON).
