I'm going with Mario as I'm more familiar with the games than I am with Sonic. Also, Mario's games were always better than Sonic's.

I don't know if it's just me but I don't find Sonic to be as iconic of a character as Mario. Neither the games nor the cartoons have ever caught my attention. Yeah, I know Jaleel White voiced Sonic numerous times but I've never noticed to tell you the truth.
