I've got NO problem with community centers or places that look to uplift economies, support politics, or even educate or provide childcare...but why pretend like churches have the copyright or supreme claim on social activism?

...but the question therefore is, at what point do you suspend the very disbelief you have in other forms of religion and look at your own views?

Ive beem to pastoral conferenxes , the majority have a job.

Probably less than 1 percent of pastors is in full time ministry

Yeah I don't fukk with Christianity too tough, I went from agnostic to being a Buddhist. (only religion that makes sense to me, teaches you to keep your thoughts/emotions in check and generally live a boss life)

But the black church is one of the few places outside of the barbershop where black community thrives, where we can get together and socialize and not have to code switch because no white folks are around. You can make all them arguments about Christianity making people complacent and being the slaver's religion but I could never hate on the black church.

The civil rights movement didn't even start with them.

Churches were included only after the potential of masses of bodies was realized.

Not to mention MLK was a socialist who cooped black liberation theology as a means of getting his message across...i'd say black churches have a very limited scope at the end of the day.

Plus, what do "churches" have that other non-superstitious bodies of people have?

Nothing.

Theres nothing stopping non-bullshyt oriented groups from from abandoning the mythology and still doing positive things for the community.

I'm not attacking anyone.

MLK was basically a communist and a borderline secularist when it comes to how he viewed religion.

He was a brilliant guy but he realized how influential religion was.

For fukks sake...you don't read the shyt he was reading, get educated at the places he was educated, and say the things he said, WITHOUT thinking that religion is the opiate of the masses.

not to mention, he chopped the bible up pretty liberally to support his social aims.

Hell, most of his supporters at the top of the chain were secularists and quite a few of them were atheists.

And MY point is, who are you to say all of those same things don't still happen in the Black Church everyday? The Black Christian church is still about progressing the race, still a trying to figure out how to make our neighborhoods and communities safer, and still planning outreach programs and discussing the state of our race in the nation. Not just every Sunday but everyday, anyone who actually is part of these regular non tv-broacasted mega-churches can tell you that

nobody is saying the church doesnt do anything

Yeah we know some of them organize community fundraisers and other stuff. But you CANNOT compare the black church role now to the black church role during the Civil Rights Era. Just stop. There are no MLK's rising up to spread a greater message beyond the religion itself.

And while ur bashing mega-churches, they still do a larger role of the stuff you mentioned (fundraisers, community/prison outreach, feeding the homeless, etc.) than the average church does.

Its a shame that only recently has the black community been able to gain access to other forms of social interaction and not had to rely on the outdated principles and ignorance of the black church.

Islam wasnt the foundation of the slave trade, compare to how the Europeans used it. The only reason why they got into the slave trade was cause of Christianity.
