A trade with the Lakers keeps Davis out of the Eastern Conference and, more precisely, out of Boston. Plus, a potential move with the Lakers could have a ripple effect in the league. Davis and Celtics guard Kyrie Irving are close and would like to become teammates one day. That could still happen in Los Angeles since a trade for Davis leaves the Lakers with enough cap space to sign Irving, a free agent this summer.
And while a LeBron-Kyrie reunion seemed unlikely as recently as two weeks ago, things changed dramatically when Irving revealed after a win over Toronto that he reached out to James to apologize for not understanding the demands of being a leader when they were teammates in Cleveland. Again, the timing is a crazy coincidence, no?
This could oddly work out perfectly for the Knicks; Davis and Kyrie together in Los Angeles and perhaps Kawhi Leonard leaving Toronto as a free agent to join the Clippers. The East’s two most accomplished postseason performers — other than Dwyane Wade, of course — are Kawhi and Kyrie. If they were both to switch conferences, that is great news for teams like the Milwaukee Bucks, Indiana Pacers, Philadelphia 76ers and, yes, the Knicks.
