Knicks picking RJ and building around him as “the guy” would be the worst case scenario given what they can do this off season. Why didn’t Silver just gift them Zion or at least Ja:snoop:

But if they wanna be back in the lottery next year with RJ and maybe actually get that #1 then “trust the process” I guess :beli:

They’d still have a nice young core

Maybe Frank will become “most improved”

But they ain’t making playoffs :manny:

The buck doesn't stop at "we drafted RJ."
They'd have a nice young core and more cap space than any team in the league for Free Agency. I do think I'd prefer staying the course and trying again next offseason over force feeding a max to a lesser piece though.

RJ could become our next franchise player like Patrick Ewing. He has the talent to be a superstar. Of course, we want him to be "the guy".

Either KD + 2nd "true max player" or maintain until next year.

Absolutely.

If KD doesn't come you work the trade market to acquire expirings attached with picks and take one year flyers on kids worth developing.

I'm not a cap expert, but in a no KD scenario wouldn't we be exchanging cap space and shorter deals for longer contracts that come with 1st round picks? Yes the longer contracts are not what we really want, but extra picks could be used over the next two offseasons to either add more young talent or packaged with those added contracts that will be closer to expiring in a trade for a star player.

At least that's how I see plan B going down.

* EDIT I think teams only trade expirings for star players or 1st round picks plus contracts close to expiring to make the trade math work.

A frugal owner may want to get under the luxury tax which would open up a chance to add an asset for just the expiring, but I'm not sure how good of an asset you can get. Houston did give up a first round pick for that reason. But to get something more enticing in terms of young talent or a potential higher first, you'd probably have to eat a significant two or three year deal (something like Batum). The good news is we have so much cap that we could probably try a combination of both and still come away with enough cap space next offseason to try again for the top tier FA's (with even more assets in hand).

Those extra assets (plus our homegrown talent) could also come in handy at the trade deadline if someone becomes available (like a Beal).

Yea if you wanna wait another decade and trust RJ getting better at literally everything

Kristaps was a franchise type player and you see the city chewed him up and spit him back out.

You really see RJ being better than Kristaps? Or even handling the pressures of carrying a Knicks team alone?

He’s better off losing and being “the guy” somewhere else

I don’t think Knicks fans have much more patience in losing and rebuilding

Especially after missing out on Zion everyone’s already bitter.

And if Brooklyn gets Kyrie :banderas:

It’ll be a shame if Knicks don’t get At least KD or AD (and they’d definitely need to trade Barrett/the 3rd pick for him).

Nobody trying to settle for only Barrett. That’s a step backwards from only 2 years ago with a healthy Kristaps.

Can’t believe some of you are lowering your standards :snoop:

You would also bank on teams being desperate to create cap space to sign or trade for someone... for instance, Brooklyn needs to get rid of Allen crabbes expiring contract this summer to have a second max slot. I’m sure they’d gladly come off they’re late first rounder to do get rid of him now. Or NO with solomon Hills expiring.
We’d probably have to commit to not signing anyone now tho to be in that position.

If RJ becomes a superstar level player, he will be infinitely more dynamic and explosive than Kristaps. What are you talking about?:dwillhuh:

Nate Duncan did an RJ breakdown and was not sold on him at all.

I keep watching RJ highlights trying to convince myself he’s a good pick at 3 for the Knicks and I’m not sold either. A lot of people believing the pre duke hype and falling in love with his duke stats
