Live TV. How do we feel about it?

I'm thinking of subscribing to Japan TV and watching some of the japanese dramas they have on there. $200 for the year.

Save episodes, movie library access, all devices, save episodes and no subtitles.

Good deal. It may help if there are Japanese subtitles so you can follow along. It helps train your ear to listen even if it takes a while.

I'm trying to move away from subtitles because I focus too much on them. I'll watch episodes of shin chan on youtube and while I know everything that is going on without looking, once I do, I start to follow those white words.

With the save feature I can replay any missed words i didn't get. Generally, their regular pace is used which is a lot faster and that's what throws off my comprehension. Gotta train that muscle though.

Animelon is a good source for anime with subtitles with overlay.

Good points. I don't know Japanese but when I was learning Chinese, I realized watching shows based in the modern era is much easier than watching "ancient China" shows because the jargon, honorifics, etc. are so different from modern spoken Mandarin. Not sure if Japanese is the same but starting with modern shows and working back to samurai stuff might help.

I'll hear something like 五月雨 (さみだれ) which doesn't have any modern usage and have to remember not to actively study it. Or when older people use something like ねば/ならぬ it's strictly old time language.

I've got to be more casual using short forms, initially the textbooks had me conditioned to polite form. That's how most Japanese shows are, casual unless speaking to an elder. So in that case you would have to remove the casual suffix and replace it with polite.

The amount of times people have told me we don't use that is astounding. But it's not a surprise, in english we don't speak like an account from the bible.

How long have you been learning Chinese?

I've been off in recent years but I studied it hard for about 8 years and passed a high level of the HSK (Chinese TOEFL). I can read pretty well and speak/listen pretty good.

Damn that's commitment. Did you end up moving there? Why did you want to learn it?

Yeah I went to school in Beijing for a semester to study in the early 2000s and ended up going back for work..

Believe it or not, I knew a Chinese professor in college who told me I should learn it and it would pay dividends. He was damn right :wow:
