@Mantis Toboggan M.D. that SB39 of Brady is bogus. I vividly recall him throwing an int cut to Deion Branch in tight coverage over Sheldon Brown. Brady was roughed on the play. It led to their last 3 pts, which extended the lead to 10. This occured in the 4th qtr. I have no idea where you got that stat from. In my mind, 2011 is when the passing game changed forever. You could still play hard defense before then. That should be taken into account, but I respect your general point.
Barry McCockiner had a video breakdown on it on YouTube. He’s a top tier hater of Brady on par with how Bret Hart hates on Vince McMahon or Bill Goldberg at any opportunity, but he never fails to bring the data to back up what he says. Could’ve made this mistake though. Over the last 26 minutes of the game his completions were as follows:

Troy Brown for 5 yards 3:28 left in the 3rd
Kevin Faulk for 13 yards with 2:58 left in the 3rd
Deion Branch for 5 yards with 1:38 left in the 3rd
Kevin Faulk for 14 yards with 14:19 left in the 4th
Deion Branch for 19 yards with 11:53 left in the 4th

My point is a lot of quarterbacks have won playoff games with far worse showings than this and if your quarterback delivers with the season on the line only for the skill position players to drop the pass that would’ve tied the game and saved the season when he’s wide open (especially if the previous drive his fumble gave 3 points to the other team in a game you lost by 2), that’s the story. The drive before, his fumble came at a point where they could’ve still kicked a field goal so they wouldn’t have needed the conversion either. Lamar’s pick was the 2nd drive of the game and it resulted in Buffalo punting in a 7-7 game. Not a play of terrible consequence given the time of it and the score at the time. If the quarterback has to be close to flawless, there’s a problem.

Here’s some quarterbacks this millennium in playoff games & even super bowls with comparable or worse performances, all ending in their team winning:

12-25 for 150 yards and a touchdown (Dilfer in Super Bowl 35)

16-27 for 145 yards and 1 touchdown while going 0-10 on 3rd down & leading the offense to 265 yards (Brady in Super Bowl 36)

13-23 for 141 yards and a pick (Manning in Super Bowl 50)

17-30 for 181 yards with 1 td & 2 picks with one going back the other way (Big Ben in 2004 vs the jets)

9-21 for 123 yards and 2 picks (Big Ben in Super Bowl 40)

22-37 for 237 yard with 1 td and 1 pick (Brady in the 2003 afc title game)

22-33 for 209 yards with 2 td’s and 3 picks (Brady in the 2007 afc title game)

4-10 for 34 yards & 1 pick (Flacco in 2009 vs the pats)

not completing a pass beyond the line of scrimmage for the final 26 minutes of the game (Brady in Super Bowl 39)

22-36 for 239 yards with 0 td’s and 2 picks (Brady in the 2011 afc title game)

21-35 for 262 yards with 0 td’s and 1 pick while leading the offense to 13 points (Brady in Super Bowl 53)

15-30 for 170 yards with 0 td’s and 2 picks (Manning in 2006 vs the ravens)

12-23 for 100 yards with 1 td and 1 pick (Mark Sanchez in 2009 vs the chargers)

If I’m not mistaken aren’t most of these defenses some of the greatest defenses of their eras?

Both being early in the game. Last 2 drives with the season on the line ended with drops and fumbles while he did his job. It wasn’t his best game but if your skill positions can’t do the basics of catch the ball and not fumble the ball, there’s the issue.

He wasn’t incredible tonight, which reminds me a lot of the 2011 afc title game where Flacco had some early mistakes but the game was defined by his teammates blowing it in far worse ways in the closing seconds once he set them up to win it.
Breh why can't Lamar just play great though?

If you're always having weird performances... why?

Especially when youre winning mvps

His regular season performances just doesn’t carry over to the playoffs and there’s enough track record to make that case.

Andrew’s mistakes doesn’t nor shouldn’t let him off the hook as he’s more sloppy with the ball come playoff time for whatever reason.

Yeah this can happen

But you're ignoring 2 things.

1) spme of those QBs were playing against great defenses and had bad weapons (2001 Brady for example).

2) old Peyton was washed up, Brady was young in 2001. Lamar is in HIS PRIME, and had his 3rd MVP this season

3) why can't Lamar ever play great though? Every qb in that list aside from Dilfer and Snachez put together a great run outside of that.

Flacco 2012
Brady 03/04/14/16/17 etc.
Peyton 06 title game/13 Denver
Big Ben 08

Like cmon.

I dont need a breakdown. Its a blatant lie!! I just told you that he completed an incut to Branch over Brown, off a playaction. Because michael Lewis came up and shook his head at the throw/catch. That was in the 4th and it was a throw over 10 yards. Disproving his and your point. I have a very good memory.

Those guys all still got help from their defense and skill positions too. The defining plays of the last 2 postseasons for the ravens on the other hand have been flowers fumbling at the 1 yard line in a game they lost by 7 and Andrews having a fumble that gave away 3 points and a dropped 2 point conversion to tie the game on their final drive where he was wide open. A key point that was just brought up to me by Stan Jones is the defense. In his 8 playoff games Lamar has gotten 1 takeaway by his defense in the 2020 wild card game and none in any other game. All those guys had a great game or two during said playoff runs but their defense also stepped up in big moments while Lamar essentially has to be flawless for his team to win because his skill positions and defense don’t give him any margin for error whatsoever.

Flacco got 3 takeaways and horrible execution on a missed field goal as well as one of the worst blown coverages ever with the game on the line in the divisional round vs Denver, 2 picks and a turnover on downs in the afc title game and then 2 takeaways and a turnover on downs and kick return touchdown in Super Bowl 47 with all 3 games being close.

Brady’s defense & special teams got big plays in nearly every playoff game, such as 4 picks in the 2003 afc title game, 2 picks including a pick 6 in Super Bowl 36, 3 picks in Super Bowl 39, the Malcolm butler and a key red zone stop earlier in Super Bowl 49, 2 special teams touchdowns in the 2001 afc title game, John kasay doing what he did in Super Bowl 38, and the pats defense holding the chargers to 12 points in the 2007 afc title game.

Manning had a great comeback in the 2006 afc title game but he shouldn’t have been there with the game he had against the ravens the week prior. His defense got multiple takeaways and held the ravens to 6 points in a game where he was 15-30 for 170 yards and 2 picks. In that afc title game his defense made a few huge plays at the end too with Bob sanders baiting Brady in robber coverage to get a 3rd down stop to set up the game winning drive and then Marlon Jackson in the same coverage getting the pick to win the game the next drive.

Ben had a great game winning drive in Super Bowl 43 but he doesn’t get there if his defense doesn’t get there without his defense forcing 3 turnovers and having a defensive score to put away the afc title game and getting to play an 8-8 chargers squad the week before that, not to mention his defense getting multiple takeaways and having a defensive touchdown.

Rodgers in 2010 got a defensive touchdown in a 1 score win in the nfc title game and in a 6 point win in the Super Bowl by Nick Collins too before this defense also forced a turnover on downs to win the game.

Maybe it is wrong, but we’re arguing over granular details. The point was that the rest of the team did enough that he hardly had to do anything after halftime.

Good points. I dislike ring culture even in a less interdependent sport like basketball, and I HATE it in an interdependent sport like football.

It makes no sense in any sport, but especially less in baseball or football. Outside of Peyton in the 2009 afc title game I can’t think of a playoff game where the quarterback damn near beat a great defense or a great team on his own. Field position matters too and a lot of people forget this part of it. Last night the 2 best starting field positions they had were at their own 35 and 36 and also started drives at their own 9 and with the game on the line started at their own 12. It’s damn near impossible for 1 guy to be responsible for the win or the loss in a sport like this.

How did Peyton beat them “on his own”?

It should be noted that “great defense” had injuries in the second half and his Defense dominated the second half shutting out the Jets.
